Shane Buechele

Is it possible that QB Shane Buechele is underrated?
That sounds a little weird to say about a senior quarterback who many projected to win all-conference honors. But after Saturday's game, what were the lasting impressions? Tyler Page's two touchdowns ... Kylen Granson's 149 yards and touchdown ... the reworked offensive line ... the solid game by the linebackers ... another solid game, both kicking and punting by Chris Naggar ...
All Buechele did Saturday at Temple was complete 24 of 35 passes for 355 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. For a lot of quarterbacks, that would be a career game, but for Buechele, it was another day at the office. Consider:
— The 355 yards gave Buechele more than 300 yards in the air for the 11th time since he transferred to SMU. The school record is 12, by Ben Hicks.
— With four touchdown passes, he now has thrown 54 in a Mustang uniform, catching and passing Justin Willis for the second-most in SMU history.
— Buechele now has 6,510 passing yards, passing former SMU quarterback (and current Dallas Cowboys starter) Garrett Gilbert for the third-most in program history.
... and he is a little over halfway through his second season at SMU.
Hicks set his records while playing in 37 games for the Mustangs; Saturday was Buechele's 21st game at SMU.
Buechele is writing his name all over the SMU record books. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the NCAA granted an extra year for all athletes, and Buechele has not said anything publicly about his future plans. SMU has three regular-season games remaining. A bowl is likely, and a trip to the AAC championship game certainly is possible. Buechele certainly could break the record for 300-yard passing games this year, and with as many as five games, it's reasonable to think the touchdown passes record is within this reach.
Stay tuned.
