Mustangs Selected For Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl

FRISCO, Texas (SMU) – SMU has accepted an invitation to play in the 2020 Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl, Executive Director Sean Johnson announced Wednesday. The game will be played Saturday, Dec. 19, at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, and will be televised on ESPN2 at a time to be determined. An opponent will be named at a later date and will likely be from Conference USA.

"We are excited to extend an invitation to SMU to play in the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl," said Executive Director Sean Johnson. "We are happy to have a local team with a great fan base and look forward to an exciting game next week at Toyota Stadium."

The Mustangs finished the regular season 7-3, and were ranked as high as No. 16 in both the AP and Coaches Polls. SMU opened the season 5-0, giving them consecutive 5-0 starts for the first time since the 1982-83 seasons, and have won seven games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2011-12 seasons.

This is SMU's third bowl appearance in four seasons, and second consecutive that they have clinched under Head Coach Sonny Dykes. This will be the 18th bowl appearance overall for the Mustangs, with SMU holding a 7-9-1 all-time record. It is SMU's second appearance in the Frisco Bowl (2017).

The Mustangs are looking for their first bowl win since the 2012 Hawai'i Bowl when they defeated Fresno State, 43-10.

Tickets to the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl are not currently on sale to the public. COVID-19 protocols will be in place and any tickets that may be made available will be very limited. Fans interested in game information and tickets should monitor the bowl website at www.thefriscobowl.com for further information to be released in the next few days.

This will be a blast from the past, very likely opponent will be UTEP.

What fun!

I know its a bowl game, but this bowl is soooo early (December 19th.) that we don't get any advantage of extra practice time or a nice destination. I would much rather just play Houston at home on this date (their coach said they were willing to play us December 19th) and call it a season/year.

I was really hoping we would be selected for the First Responder Bowl to be played on December 26 at Ford Stadium as we would likely face a Big XII opponent and get an extra week of practice. However, given the funky season and that we were terrible for so long I'll take a bowl game anywhere against anybody. I just hope our players wake up from their funk and win the game. I'm tired of being embarrassed in bowl games the last two appearances along with miserable endings to each of the last 3 seasons including this one.

How awesome!!

I know the Frisco Bowl always loves to have SMU!!! Two out of four seasons! They even always have a picture of our poms on their home page so they will be as excited as we are!

Go Ponies!

We are going to have to get ready quickly!

If we don't have time to get all of our extra practices in before the bowl can we have them after the game?

Dont really mind this at all.

Get our bowl game out of the way. Guessing more bowls will be canceled so making sure we get to play in one.

It could be worse

That makes sense, however suggestions of UTEP don't when you look at the standings. LTU and UAB would seem to likelier options. https://www.espn.com/college-football/standings

I hope it's not Louisiana Tech! I don't want another beat down from them.

Hasn't thought about that. Would make a fascinating subplot if UTSA wasn't playing in CUSA title game that day

I would so rather get a make up with Houston or TCU. Oh well after the ECU [deleted] poor performance, we deserve this bowl. It'll be one of those games where I'll just see the final score notification on my phone and then I can finally be like BRING ON 2021!

It can be Sonny's (and SMU's) revenge!

Possible rematches with either FAU or La Tech. Works for me. Would hate to think we have reached a point where this team should fear either of those opponents but the UTSA matchup would be an interesting story line as well.
