Earlier this week, President Joe Biden signed a proclamation making June 19 – Juneteenth – a national holiday. It should be a day of reflection and understanding as we all learn the significance of the date. Many have already; many have not.
One of the most eloquent and community-minded Cardinals – tackle Kelvin Beachum – searched his soul and wrote about Juneteenth, sharing it with the team website (azcardinals.com). Here are Beachum’s words:
Today is Juneteenth – the 156th anniversary of the day 250,000 enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom via military order, nearly two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
As a Mexia, TX native, it's hard to reconcile feelings of celebration and feelings of sadness.
