Mordecai Gets Some Heisman Love

Postby panhandle_pony » Sun Sep 26, 2021 11:13 pm

From ESPN - at # 5:

5. SMU QB Tanner Mordecai: Each week in this space, we'll try to feature one player from outside the big teams who deserves a little Heisman love, even if he's not likely to get any votes. This week, it's Mordecai, who led SMU to an emotional win in the 100th edition of the Iron Skillet Game. Mordecai didn't post his usual video-game numbers, going 17-of-28 for 245 yards and three INTs. But his two TD passes brought his season total up to 20, which leads the nation.

He has thrown 5 more TDs than any other QB.

Tanner had 4 TD passes this week, not 2. They did get the total right at least.

He should get votes and not just some love!

The announcers at the TCU game referenced the zero sacks a couple times - praising the line and Mordecai's scrambling ability.

His 3 interceptions stood out in this game. At least two of those times he forced a pass to avoid the sack and ended up getting picked off. Fortunately we survived but in a close game down the line, that could be a difference maker.

Hope they review video with him this week and focus on:
1) find your other options
2) Throw it away (without Grounding)
3) take the sack and live another down

He commented in post game interview and is well aware of those mistakes, saying on at least one that he should have stepped up in the pocket. Will mopt be surprised to see him doing more of that and getting a few yards before sliding down. It's the 3rd down plays he's more likely to foce things.

This note from one of the CBS writers:

A former Oklahoma backup quarterback (SMU's Tanner Mordecai) is on pace to throw 60 touchdown passes, tying Joe Burrow's all-time record. Mordecai leads the country with 20 through four games. The Sooners' current quarterback, Spencer Rattler, has eight passing` touchdowns (five against Western Carolina).
