I hate Mac Engel but I think he may be right

TL;DR: Sonny wants TCU, but TCU isn't sure about Sonny. Particularly because of late-season collapses three years running.

And, not mentioned by Engel, but I don't think the Ponies drop that OT game at Houston and the three-point loss at Memphis without the distraction of Sonny's flirtation with Tech, then TCU. Ironic. Maybe if SMU manages to win tomorrow TCU will actually offer? Blech.

Don't like Engel as well but think he is correct and probably well informed with the going ons at tc-who.

Now, that begs the question. SD has done his best to get out of SMU. Do we still want him if he doesn't get the tcu job? My issue is that he will be looking at every opportunity to leave (sound like the used car salesman that was here before?) and will bail at the earliest opportunity again leaving us high and dry, picking up the pieces and starting all over again.

At this point he has lost my support as well as probably a few others.

If Dykes doesn’t want to be at SMU, then as far as I’m concerned, he can to hit the road!

Let’s not lose sight of the fact that this is all speculation and Engel is a very unreliable narrator. But his take does pass my Occam’s Razor test of seeming the most likely explanation.

Engel is in the business of protecting TCU.

Sonny is not going to TCU. Neither is Napier, neither is Matt Campbell. TCU will end up with the 8th choice on their list, just like Tech. Probably Deion. Stability and winning at a decent school is a path to the big time. The Big 12 isn't. Coaches clearly don't value the conference.

Thank you Jason.

Engel is the FW version of Bret Vito. Partisan clowns but know where their bread is buttered. Sometimes they're correct but a broken clock is correct twice everyday.

Maybe TCU can surprise everyone and hire Chad Morris for a father/son combo the next couple of years

That’s fine, but why is his SMU status still undecided? Freaking UTSA can lock up their coach but SMU can’t figure it out?

Because IF Sonny signs the contract (I think TCU is not in play, but big time jobs could be), this is his last chance to negotiate for 7 years. The facility investment, quality, buyout clauses... everything needs to be exactly what he wants it to be.

I have no idea of Engel is right. Honestly, this is all grand speculation until something happens.
College football coaches are notorious for being evasive or outright lying about their intentions.
How many times have you seen coaches deny any interest in moving only to move a day later.

I would still not be at all surprised to see Dykes on the sidelines at SMU next year. I think the school can make the financial commitment to keep him and I think he's shown he can build this program into something that will make it worth it for him and the school. I think leaving now would be a mistake and I think the school can make that argument to him.

If he goes, I don't know who SMU will pick, but I'm pretty sure it will not be Gary Patterson. He seems to be a bit off his game the past few years. He's gotten very wrapped up in trivial stuff. I am not sure he will find a ton of schools knocking on his door to try to hire him.

Sonny should hold out for the Texas job.

JasonB I value your articulate insights as much or more than anyone on this board and I take your word to the bank. But Deion to TCU? Honestly I think that this flirtation is just to make their search appear inclusive and to distract from the fact that there is a pending deal with Dykes. Sonny clearly sees it as his duty to finish out the season with this team and my guess is that he will move on immediately after our bowl. At the same time I agree with you. A Big 12 job is just a stepping stone for a better conference. A couple more really good years here and Sonny is off to the SEC.

I tend to agree. Deion to TCU doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I would think Deion would be much more logical at Georgia Tech since he is most closely associated with the Falcons.

But then again, none of us knows what Sonny & his family really want. Bottom line is that he will make a good living wherever he chooses to be.

I guess all the photos of Team Dykes post game mean something good?
