Should we wait?

Of course most fans will want a new coach in place asap. Adding a new coach obviously brings stability, leadership, excitement, and immediate recruiting.
But should we wait because several current coaches will be fired in the next few weeks and we don't want to settle for 2nd best choice?...there will soon be more to choose from that might like to make $4 million a year at SMU.
Is the short term or long term more important?

We start the search yesterday, there is much involved in the details, and we
might not start at 4 million just because we offered S.D. that much

Hard to believe and just incredible that we just started a search. IMO we should have been putting out feelers and building a top 5 -10 list as our inept a.d. knew that SD running off was more than just rumor some time ago.
I believe we need a top level championship quality coach and doubt if our admin/boosters have even attempted to contact any of them.
I still believe that GP could work out well here. Less pressure and also a small revenge factor.

All ADs keep a running list of top alternative coaching candidates for situations like this. I know not everyone is a Rick Hart fan, but I'm sure he has such a list.

Having a list and making an effort to start checking and eliminating possible candidates are two totally different things. Doubt if he has made any effort.

I believe they've known for weeks that SD would be leaving. That's why the contract leak to Sports Illustrated happened. Same thing occurred with Tom Herman at UH when looking at UT and LSU. UH told the media that they had a $4MM offer on the table. Same for Sumlin which was initially offered less by A&M that what was offered to stay. After a year or two with Johnny Football, he was making $5MM.
Just don't go down the hall and hire someone like Garrett, Samples or Leavitt as head coach.
Chad Morris was the hot OC at Clemson with huge Texas ties. He worked out well in turning around the program from the June mess. Who's that OC/DC who has strong Texas ties?
Colby Carthel is a strong pick:

Coach Carthel only makes around $260,000 a year at SFA?https://govsalaries.com/carthel-colby-d-115839928I doubt we have a chance to keep Samples, but if we hired this guy there would be a lot of cash left over to throw around to great assistants.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_PI7DCOULU

what like UTSA did?
look i've never heard of this SFA guy before today
so I am not necessarily on his bandwagon
they need to look at a bunch of guys
but pretty much all of them are in some ways a "roll of the dice"
and we are going to have to roll the dice because of who we are

Carthel looks solid with winning programs at two places and deep Texas ties, but yes, he's probably more of a UNT or Rice guy next. Someone who'll pay him $1MM bucks. Chad probably paid Traylor at least high six figures to coach at Arkansas.
The two hot names, Blake Anderson from A-State and Neal Brown from Troy, from the Sun Belt the last few years are doing well at their new places. Blake is 8-3 in his first year at Utah State and Neal, who's building a program at WVU, just beat Texas. Could've probably had Blake but Troy was as hot as Napier.

You know Sonny is going to try and flip SMU's highest rated commits to TCU so we need to work hard to retain Samples and someone who would be O.K. with having him serve as [deleted]'t HC and to continue grooming him as a future HC at SMU. Tom Herman would be high on my list and he's working in Chicago for the Bears in a capacity that would probably not be missed if he was to leave immediately.

CP- it is likely that none of the Chi. bears would be missed.

so we are not better than the second best team in the country. we should tell sonny he's done a great job getting us to relevance in the conf we are in...now work on the conference championship level. and give him his raise

sorry but do not believe we have played the second best team in the country. Current standing have cincy at #5 and that is probably over rated. would love to see them in a bowl game against Ohio St.- they would get crushed worse than we did.
