How times have changed — linemen

Postby PonyTales » Mon Jun 24, 2024 11:01 am

For the greybeards among us ... remember the days when Mike Cavan and Phil Bennett recruited tackles who were 6'2" (maybe) and 220 pounds and assured us "wait a few years -- they'll grow"?

Just looked at the heights and weights listed for the incoming offensive and interior defensive linemen: Jonathan Jefferson, Nate Anderson, Savion Byrd, Anthony Booker, Blake Burris, Mike Lockhart, Andrew Chamblee, Paris Patterson, Jared Harrison-Hunte and Que'Shon Sapp, as well as freshmen King Large and Graham Uter. I went with their heights and weights listed on the SMU site, and googled the guys who aren't on the roster yet.

Average size: 6'4.5" and 308.25

Big Men win football games.

For all the bald guys out there... remember the early 80's and playing 10 O-line guys every game. And a D-line that subbed out and kept a rested/fresh line on the field.

That is what I see Lashley putting together.

Agreed. WRs and RBs are flashy, but their effect is minimal without the big guys up front.
