Knighton Tabbed To Doak Walker Award Watch List
DALLAS (SMU) - SMU graduate student Jaylan Knighton has been named to the Doak Walker Award watch list, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced on Tuesday.
The prestigious Doak Walker Award was created in 1989 to honor the nation's most outstanding collegiate running back. Named for the 1948 Heisman Trophy winner and three-time All-America selection from SMU, the Doak Walker Award recognizes a football player's outstanding performance on the field, as well as his achievements in the community and in the classroom.
Knighton is coming off the best season of his career in 2023, leading the Mustangs in rushing with 745 yards along with seven touchdowns. He began his career with Miami, registering 423 yards on the ground during his junior season and a team-leading 561 yards with eight touchdowns in his sophomore campaign.
The Doak Walker watch list marks the third preseason accolade the Lauderhill, Florida, native has earned. Earlier this summer, he was named to the Dave Campbell All-Texas First Team Offense and the Athlon Sports Preseason All-ACC Fourth Team Offense.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name 10 semifinalists for the honor in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will also be announced in November. The committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. The recipient of the 2024 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on December 12, 2024.
