Totally agree. And no way we would compete for the AAC title this year if we were still in it.
RL looks like a G5-er.

I guess now would be a safe time to revisit my hot tea that got the pony fans crowd riled up with pitchforks last time I was on the site:
Lashlee is an average coach that is terrible at game managing with extremely suspect calls that fly in the face of basic strategy concepts. He assembled a very talented roster that he recruited with momentum from the success of his predecessor and used his freshly recruited transfers for a sudden surge of overachievement against the weakest the AAC has ever been while being backed by depth that was incumbent.

We were 11-3 last year and won a conference title, and I believe Lashlee just got a contract extension. So no, not on a short leash.

Short leash? You can't be serious. BYU is not elite, or even close, but it's better than every team on last year's schedule except Oklahoma and TCU. This is what happens when you jump up into a new conference: the opponents get better.
The offense stunk tonight. But this sky-is-falling stuff is nothing more than an emotional reaction. Get some rest.

Did you watch the game? OU is better than BYU, as you said, but we looked A LOT better against OU last year than BYU this year. Yes the opponents get better, and your record should get worse from the previous year. But your TEAM should get better when you move up to P4 -- especially in the era of NIL and the transfer portal. We are clearly WORSE than we were last year.
We may be chicken little with our reactions, but you appear to have your head in the sand like ostrich(?) little.

Both times SMU has played BYU in recent history, SMU was the better team and lashlee found a way to coach the team to defeat.

Lashlee is consistent. He is consistent with poor game management. He can recruit. He should hire Jim Tressel to call plays and they'd easily win these sort of games. The team is a B+ for overall talent. Execution is a D. This is the coach's responsibility. Game management is an F. Cannot compete with a D and an F no matter your talent level. Look back over the last few years and you'll see a trend. Lashlee doesn't make it to the end of the season. I suspect he will be fired by the boosters after losses to TCU and FSU.
P.S. Better yet, fire Lashlee now and hire Tressel.
P.S.S. ACC looking soft overall. Miami appears to be the clear favorite. It's early, let's see what happens.

Many of the coaches in other sports at SMU seem to have found ways to coach up their players such that their teams often outperform. Perhaps Rhett could hang with some of these other coaches and learn?

If you get as far as lashlee has in his career and think that winning a game on 2 point conversion by running a qb draw with no functioning o line, no functioning running Backs, 5 good receivers, and 1 very good qb is a good idea, then he’s not going to ever learn how to not be a dunce

My problem with Lashley is he goes for 4th and short around our own 40 in the first half when the game is close like a bad gambling habit. Also last night not taking
a chip shot field goal in the first stages of the game that eventually cost us the game. It should’ve been a 18 - 18 OT game.
As a young Mustang fan (SMU 76), my SMU 50 Dad, brothers, and I nicknamed Hayden Fry Field Goal Fry because he always took the field goal in that situation. Our mistake, and he would probably be nicknaming Lashley “Ramblin Gamblin Lashley if still with us.

It retrospect, we should've gone immediately for the field goal anytime we were within their 40. Maybe that's the new strategy. It lowers the bar for the offense.

Well, that would be more of a possible score than running or throwing the ball with our offense.

Too early to say better/worse. I was furious last year when we lost to TCU and to BC, but we did win 11 games. Yesterday, no question we we worse.
The defense was great. Collin Rogers was awesome. This isn't a Jennings/Stone question. Until the offensive line gets sorted out, everyone on the offense will look to have taken a step back, whether that assessment is fair or not.

Tressel is in his seventies and has not coached a football game in 14 years!
We will be lucky to go 6-6 this year, and Coach Lash won't be fired even if we are below 500
