Collin Rogers Selected To Lou Groza Award Stars Of The Week

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (SMU) - SMU junior kicker Collin Rogers was recognized for his record-setting performance against BYU last Friday. Rogers was selected as one of three kickers this past week by Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl.

Each week the commission recognizes the top three kickers from FBS division teams as the "Stars of the Week".

Rogers turned in the career night against the Cougars last Friday at Ford Stadium, going a perfect 5-for-5 on field goals in the loss. The five made field goals set a new program record for most made field goals in a single game, breaking a record the junior already shared from last season's AAC Championship win at Tulane.

Rogers also made two from 50-plus yards, highlighted a career-long 53-yarder. He has now made five of his last six from beyond 50 yards.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.

Rogers has been "money" so far this year. Hope he stays and shatters all the kicking and scoring records here. I do fear other schools will be coming after him after this season.
