I remember a while back you were raving about a BBQ joint in a small town outside of Houston on I-45. I am heading down to Houston Saturday to catch the Ranger/Astro game at Minute Maid and I want to check out that BBQ spot. What's the name and location? Thanks in advance.

Probably Woody's Smokehouse

Postby Grider » Fri Jul 02, 2004 9:22 am

It's the self-proclaimed "jerky capital of the world"

It's in Centeville on Higway 7. There's one on both sides of 45 but the one on the west side is bigger. It's really more of a smokehouse than a BBQ joint, but they do have BBQ. You can get, however, anything from Turkey Jerky to Elk summer sausage. I would highly recommend checking it out. I always stop there when I happen to be passing through.

Fellow Mustangs: I'm sorry I didn't see this post earlier. I've been away from the computer for awhile. The next time you're heading to Houston, stop in Huntsville at the nicknamed Church of the Holy Smokes (it's a real church - real name is the Mount Zion Baptist Church - located about a half-mile from the Sam Houston State campus). If you're headed soutbound on I-45, take the exit where the Huntsville Memorial Hospital is located. Take the bridge across the highway and go past the Dairy Queen. The road will wind around a little until you see the church located on your right hand side. It's open Tuesday thru Saturday from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Get there EARLY! Lines are usually a bit long...especially on Saturdays! Make sure you know what you want to order when you get up to the counter...the little ol' ladies who run the place don't want you wastin' their time when you get there...there's other people behind ya! Enjoy! (Oh, yeah..NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ARE ALLOWED so order the sweet tea!)
