SMU loses pledge from Texas OL

Irving, Texas offensive lineman Chris Hall had committed to SMU during his sophomore year, but he has recently decided it was time to change that pledge.

“I recently de-committed from SMU,” 6-foot-5, 285-pound Hall said. “It’s a great place over there. They’re doing a lot of great things. I don’t have a single bad thing to say about the school, the program or anything. I just didn’t feel like that is the place for me.”

Hall has several other schools interested in him already at this point.

“I am looking at Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Florida and Iowa,” he said. “Those are my top four right now. Those four have offered already.

“I have some that haven’t offered that I would like to like, Kansas State, Texas and Arkansas. I think Kansas State probably will offer soon, but I’m not sure about Texas and Arkansas.”

Hall has some familiarity with the three that haven’t offered.

“I’ve been down to Texas and looked at their place. It’s all nice. The coaches were nice and the facilities were first class. Arkansas is a school I have followed and watched and gotten a lot of mail from. Kansas State’s offensive line coach, Bob Stanley, was my high school offensive line coach early on. He’s now up there and I’ve talked with him. I think now that I have de-committed, I will probably get an offer.”

Hall isn’t locking himself into a time frame for a decision.

“I’m not going to set a date for a decision. I’m going to play it by ear and go from there. I want to visit the schools I am interested in and make an informed decision. I’m going to be there for four or five years, so I want to make sure it’s the right place for me.”

Though Chris Hall's body and mind are in the hustle and bustle of the big city, his heart is in the country. More specifically, it's in Stillwater, Okla.

Hall, Irving's 6-5, 280-pound senior offensive tackle, said he has made an oral commitment to Oklahoma State. Last summer, Hall had committed to SMU, where his brother, Zach, is a sophomore linebacker.

Oral commitments are non-binding. The first day a football recruit can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 2.

"I just loved the small-town atmosphere and how everything revolves around Oklahoma State football," Hall said.

Hall's said his interest in SMU began to wane before Irving's spring practice in May. He told SMU coach Phil Bennett he was going to explore his options after receiving 15 other scholarship offers. Hall narrowed his choices to Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Florida and Iowa, and he made several unofficial visits.

But Hall found his home on his trip to Stillwater. Hall had received positive feedback about the program from Oklahoma State and former Irving running back Greg Gold. OSU coach Les Miles, who was an offensive line coach with the Dallas Cowboys and at Michigan before becoming a head coach, also impressed Hall.

And OSU runs an I-formation offense comparable to Irving, with similar blocking schemes.

"With Coach Miles' background, for him to want you as an offensive lineman tells me a lot," said Hall, who is a member of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Super Team.

Hall said he has no ill will toward the SMU program.

"I know my brother and family support me in any decision I make," Hall said. "This is my final decision, and the only recruiting trip I will make from here on out is my official visit to Stillwater."
