Backup Punter?

Postby braginator » Fri Jul 30, 2004 9:51 am

WHo is backing up Mentzel at punter? I know Rushbrook did it last year and Meeks was supposed to have that role this year, but there is no sign of Meeks on the recently released roster...

I'm not sure who is backing up Mentzel. A couple years ago we had a hell of a backup named Matt Bragman. Punted the skin right off the ball. Not to mention he was a hell of an American. I'm not sure what his status is. I almost positive he transferred to UT and might punt for them this year. I also heard he has been rated one of Austin's top 10 most eligable bachelors. Its all heresay.

There's no sign of Meeks on the roster because you are looking at the wrong school. Go check the roster for Northwestern Louisiana State, you'll find him over there.

I heard that Bragman guy dropped out of school, joined the Marines, and got sent to iraq. Then he defected tto Al-Quaida, and now he's going to be courtmartialed. Its all just hearsay.

I assume Matt Rushbrook is the backup punter, but I also know that Ryan Wolcott can punt. I would assume McMurtray can, also.

Incoming Freshman, Greg Taussig averaged over 45 yards a punt last year while being named to the Florida all-state team. He is a better kicker than punter!

If he has any hangtime on 45-yard punts, you'd think someone would have offered that guy a scholarship. How did he end up at SMU?

If nothing else, it's nice to see some competition to push Mentzel (and maybe McMurtray/Wolcott).

backup punter

Taussig was awarded a partial academic scholarship at SMU. That, coupled with a season ending injury last year made his decision an easy one. He is now fully healed and stronger than ever and looking forward to competing for the starting job.

Sounds good - competition makes everyone better, right?

No, C James was close at 44.9 but you have to take into account many teams let him kick away while they defensed the fake

I'm from Fla. and I never heard of this kid.

I also went to watch practice through the fence this weekend. I couldn't see any names on the helmets of the newcomers, but I sure didn't see any punters who were 6'3". Mentzel cranked some bombs, and I also recognized Ryan Wolcott. There was a third guy there, and maybe that was this Taussig guy, but I doubt it, because he was closer to 5'9" than to 6'3".

He may or may not have been at practice, but apparently he does exist, at least.

Are there any players who showed up late (missed the first day or two of practice?) I would think that especially with walk-ons, this would be frowned upon.
