solutionRecruit every d-i sized player fron Southlake and Highland Park. They are always winners and always will be. Even when they were not the biggest or the best they always found a way to win. Hell there are guys in backup roles better than most starters on other teams because they are sooooo deep. Such a solution would likely be better than what we have done in the past. The last three QB's at HP (one twice) and Southlake have been better than what we have now. That would have been a steal if anyone of them would have come. In the future maybe they will if familiar players and a winning tradition were recultivated...
Re: solutionIt's not like we haven't recruited those schools. As much as those guys excel in high school (and how much of that is due to the coaching at those schools, and how much is due to the fact that so many of them have personal trainers, nutritionists, etc?), not all have the size (as you covered) and speed and athleticism to excel at the college level. Some do, of course, but just because someone is on a great HS team doesn't mean they can play in college. It's too early to tell what we have in (Southlake Carroll's) Mitch Enright. And Charlie Berry has turned out to be a tough hombre inside. But how much have (Highland Parkers) Grant Eidson, Brent Karrington, Ryan Wolcott, etc. done in recent years? I'm not badmouthing those guys -- I'm sure they're great guys who work hard and want nothing more than to be successful players. Maybe Wolcott still will .... maybe he won't -- I hope he does. The other two are gone. The school a player is from doesn't mean he's a great player. Didn't Coach Cavan crow a little (as Coach Bennett did a few years later) about a recruiting class full of "winners" from teams that won (or at least competed for) state championships? There has to be a certain amount of speed and athleticism to go along with HS production. That's why there are all of those "combines" for high schoolers. There are guys who haven't done squat in HS but get signed because they have huge physiques or blinding speed. I want everyone who plays for the Ponies to have great success -- on the field, in the classroom, in life. But let's not start recruiting selectively based on what school a guy attended. Recruit bigger, better athletes.
