In the DC area its the opposite the Catholic and private schools are loaded and the public schools are left behind. DeMatha, St. Johns, Gonzaga, Carroll, Flint Hill, Episcopal, Georgetown Prep, St. Johns-Prospect Hill, St. Stephen's/St. Agnes have all produced multiple Division 1 players.

Guys, I think we are missing an important point here -- we may need this guy just to scrimmage this coming season numbers wise.! The current roster for next year shows ten players. If someone twists an ankle, or somthing similar, we can't scrimmage without one or more walk-ons.

Agreed. Walk ons do have a very important role on the team and from time to time you find guys that end up contributing much more than you expect. The only walk-on I recall in recent years getting into the rotation at all was Bobby Aitkenhead for a brief time. Voc was scholarship wasn't he or was he also a W/O? Am I forgetting anyone?

Strake doesn't recruit any more or less than other schools. Dallas Jesuit sent a kid to Illinois a few years ago, and like St. Mark's has produced a handful of legit football recruits in recent years (the Thorntons, Thomas Derricks, Omar Jenkins, etc.) It happens, just not as often. Public schools do not have the market cornered on talented athletes.

I think the phrase is "recruited walk-on."

Maybe someone can ask Doherty questions during the coaches tour next week

Private schools do turn out some division 1 basketball players here and there. Although Dallas is somewhat limited in this regard, there are some other places around the state which are able to produce D1 material. Westbury Christian, Heritage Christian, and Cornerstone Christian, to name a few.

In this past year......

Hasheem Thabeet, Community Christian, signed with Uconn
Samuel Hannes, Cornerstone Christian, Valparaiso
Justin Reily, Dallas Jesuit, Penn

For 2007.......

Nate Miles, Cornerstone Christian
DeAndre Jordan, Houston Episcopal
Alex Wangmene, San Antonio Central Catholic
Melvin Goins, Heritage Christian
Biko Paris, Cypress Comm Christian
Brian Stafford, Heritage Christian

True, the overwhelming majority of division one athletes in the major sports are from public schools, but there are some exceptions.
