Maybe I am misinterpretting what you are saying. If so I appologize for my following comments:

That is the biggest crock of sh*t I have ever heard. A lack of financial hardship in life makes a football player a risk? I don't care whether you are filthy rich or dirt poor, being good at ANYTHING comes from having some of the God given ability to do so in addition to the drive and determination to be great at it. This applies for football as well. Also, you don't know what if any hardships he may has had in his life. Secondly, even if he has had no financial harships you cannot assume that this kid as a risk because he isn't poor. If you want to knock the competition he has played against, I am on board with you. If you want to knock the kid for not having used foodstamps at some point during his highschool career then I think you are missing the boat here.

Yes, that's why we are known as risk-takers by recruiting kids from
HP. I guess the fact that most go elsewhere just means there are bigger risk-takers than SMU out there.

OC Mustang, my experiences have been rather positive regarding SMU around Laguna Beach, Corona Del Mar and Newport Beach, the three most affluent places in OC. Outside those areas, you are correct...SMU is not very well known.

When people who have never heard of SMU ask me about my school, I always tell them 'SMU is the USC of Texas'.

I started out at USC for a year and a half. It's going to school in the ghetto for sure. USC alumni are the strongest I have seen anywhere - business and sports whereas SMU alumns could care less if you went to SMU in business situations. Both schools have very rich students but USC is much bigger ~ 15,000 students I think.

Chicks are hot at both schools and drive nice cars, etc. Kids at USC go home for the weekend and it's a ghost town on most non-football weekends.

Latest on Acho

Trojans, Horns closing in on Acho

By John Talman, Recruiting Analyst – Rivals.com

Big things are happening with Dallas St. Marks defensive end Sam Acho. More scholarship offers are in hand and a pair of big schools could be just around the corner with their offers as well.

Southern Cal coach Ken Norton Jr. has told Acho that recently that the written offer from the Trojans is in the mail and should arrive this week. The Texas coaches are also picking up their interest, according to the rising defender. Several other schools have recently got involved making things tight as the 6-foot-2, 250-pounder prepares to narrow down his list.

"Stanford, Nebraska, and Iowa have all sent their written offers now," Acho said. "Coach Norton said that they're sending me the written offer, I'm excited about that and I'm also excited about Stanford and Nebraska. Stanford has great academics and now that it's official, they're high on my list."

The Longhorns have also piqued Acho's interest. Growing up in the Lone Star state, Acho says that it's hard to deny his growing interest in UT.

"I'm waiting to see how much interest they show me, but I'm a big Texas fan since I've grown up here," Acho said. "Its Texas pride I guess you could say. I love the school and it's a great football program."

Acho says that his coach is still in the process of sending a highlight tape to Oklahoma and is waiting to see what the Sooners say about the tape. His favorites are pretty much the same with Stanford, Virginia, and Southern Cal being some of his top choices, but things seem to be evening out.

"All the schools are up there with me, so it's about the same," Acho said about favorites.

Acho says that he plans to narrow down his list to a handful of schools just before the season begins. However, he won't stop from pulling the trigger if he can narrow it down to one.

"I'm going to wait until the time is right," Acho said about shaving his favorites list and his decision. "I want to get it down to about three or four late this summer, but if I feel one school stands out by then, I'll commit."

TCU, SMU, Tulsa, and Oklahoma State have also offered Acho.

Dear Sam,

You don't know me but here's a little bit of advice. Take one of those standing offers - now. Not this afternoon, not tomorrow, not next week, now. Scholarship offers tend to disappear as fast as they come so before you fall too much in love with the process, or twist a knee, or have some of those coaches realize that you are dominating 5'10", 200lb offensive tackles whose futures include sitting in daddy's suite at Texas Stadium and skiing in Vail every winter, commit now.

I wonder if the "offers in writing" are all the same or if there are variables that he is considering.

Sam received his UT offer and sounds like he isn't going to wait long to pull the trigger.
