There's a September Friday night already red-circled in Duncanville, Texas.
The Duncanville football team is already anticipating their season opener against the Berkner Rams. Last season Berkner, which went 12-1 and made it to the third round of the 5A playoffs, defeated Duncanville by the score of 34-16 in a game that Panther players frankly describe as a blowout. This year the Panther squad is saying that the Rams will get some payback.
2005 was only the second time in the past decade that Duncanville, which finished the season 6-4, failed to make the playoffs. With the Panthers picked to be among the best football teams in the Metroplex in 2006, the season opener may be a barn burner. Among the players the game will feature is Panther linebacker Mychal Sisson. Mychal caught recruiters eyes after a junior season in which he made 89 tackles, including 10 tackles for losses.
Mark Polizzi caught up with Mychal Sunday evening. Here's what Mychal had to say.
MP: Mychal, tell us first what you've been doing this summer?
MS: Well mostly when I've not been at work I've been working out. I've got two jobs and when I'm not working there, I'm working out with the team in the weight room or on the track.
MP: How about the academic side of things, do you expect to qualify without any problems?
MS: I'm a real good student. I've already taken the SAT. I'll probably qualify without any problems.
MP: Mychal at the end of the recruiting trail, what kind of school do you think you want to sign with?
MS: I'm not sure right now. I haven't narrowed it down any. What I want, I think, is some place where I can play, be happy, and get a good education.
MP: What about recruiting? How's it been going?
MS: It's been going real good. Right now I hear the most from Colorado State and San Deigo State. I'ver got offers from both and from Rice, Tulsa, Iowa State, SMU and Tulane.
MP: Mychal of that group of schools, in addition to CSU and SDSU, do you have any particular interest in one or two of the others?
MS: I'm interested in them all but I know more about Colorado State and San Deigo State because I hear from them more. So I haven't gotten into it as much with the others and I don't know as much about 'em.
MP: What kind of senior season are you expecting?
MS: We'll have a good season and probably go a lot farther than we did the last couple years. Last year we didn't even make it in. In 2004 we made it to the second round.
MP: What about the Berkner game?
MS: They blew us out last season. This year'll be pay back.
