Rebels eye Sunshine QB

Joe Weatherford By: Yancy Porter

Joe Weatherford (QB, Land O' Lakes, FL) - It is no secret that the Rebels are in search for a big time QB prospect.Could Joe Weatherford be their man?

"I went to Ole Miss' camp and really enjoyed it. Coach Werner is from around here, so I know a lot about him. He was actually recruiting me when he was at Miami. I am real impressed with his system. We talk all of the time. I feel really comfortable around him. I also liked Ole Miss' campus. It was great," stated Joe Weatherford.

The Rebels only offer for the QB position is Stephen Garcia, but Weatherford could be in line for an offer.

"I plan on going back there for an official visit in the Fall. We have not set a date, but we are talking about it."

Where else has Joe camped at this summer?

"I have been to Alabama, Ole Miss, Central Florida, SMU, and Nike. I am actually at the SMU camp right now. SMU offered me, and I have a lot of family who live in the Dallas area, so I wanted to check them out. It has been a nice time."

How did his Alabama experience go?

"It really liked Alabama. They had a lot of good QB's there. Robert Marve got offered before I did, and he committed. I liked Ole Miss a little bit better, but I was trying to get that offer from Alabama. Ole Miss was just so nice. I plan on going back. They have not offered me yet, but hopefully they will."

Which colleges are still in the running for Joe's signature?

"Central Florida, Louisville, and Ole Miss are probably my Top 3."

What stands out about Central Florida?

"I just like the overall situation. Their QB coach is a real nice guy. I just like what is going on over there, and they were the first school to offer me."

And Louisville?

"I have not seen them, but I was planning on going to their camp. I did not make it, but I will probably take an official visit there. I am just real interested in them, and they have given me a scholarship offer, so they are real interested in me."

Has Joe received any additional offers this summer?

"Duke offered me not too long ago, so did UConn."

Joe's older brother, Drew Weatherford, is currently the starting QB for FSU.

"Drew has given me a lot of perspective on what it takes to succeed on that level. He has always been there to give me advise. He has definitely helped my mental game out a lot."

What else does Joe do well on the field?

"I think my footwork is my number one accomplishment. I have great footwork, and that is what I have concentrated on my whole career."

Joe passed for 1975 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior, as he completed over 60 percent of his passes.

Anyone know how this kid compares to his brother as a player when Drew was a HS senior?

I talked to his granmother this past weekend. Joe is interested in SMU, but he's also looking at a whole slew of other schools. The Texas faction of the family would love to see him play in Dallas though. If SMU chalks up some W's this year, we might have a legit shot at him.

I gather he's not quite the physical specimen his brother Drew is, but he's a good QB and is very well coached. His grandfather, who used to live in my building, played at SMU, so it's in his blood.... I hope.

New Rivals article indicates that UCF is his top school right now. Notes that he still has the same offers as before, including SMU, but SMU isn't otherwise mentioned SMU in the article. He is hoping for more offers. Says he has the top passing stats in the county with 1,250 yards passing and 13 touchdowns so far. If he has an interest in us, it sure doesn't seem evident in this article. Rivals rating is 3 stars and 5.6.
