Mr. Recruiting's new job -- at least it should be

Postby Big10Ponyfan » Thu Nov 30, 2006 12:26 am

I thought of Mr. Recruiting when I read this in the Bennett stories on Wednesday.

There is no better time to walk away from the law practice and show the SMU football program the way when it comes to recruiting and what it's going to take to get it done. And since he has the athletic department background, he can make the case.

Quote in the story:
...Bennett said he planned to add in-house recruiting and high school relations coordinators. Improved recruiting will continue to be a major emphasis...

If there is not an application with his name on it, he's either unwilling to do it and prefers to sit behind the keyboard reviewing web sites and making his own analysis and taking shots at the SMU staff or he knows his recruiting knowledge really doesn't stack up against Eric Roark and the rest of the SMU staff.

Either way, it's time for him to put this knowledge to use. The worst Phil and the boys can do is say no.

I thought I was arguing that SMU shouldn't fire Head Coaches every 5 years unless he was given an equal opportunity to compete on an even basis with his natural and traditional rivals. Mrydel and I are some of the few on this board who have taken that position. Now if you actually think that Bennett is signing his 1st 2nd or even 5th choice at any of these positions then you are denser than I thought. I don't have a problem with their evaluation skills-I've even commented several times that it appears to me that Bennett is one of the first to identify sleepers who suddenly become hot recruits. My probem is that in the last 2-3 years he's closed very few deals for the player HE WANTED. Guess you are just to trying to kiss his [deleted] now that everybody saw how you starting jumping off the Bennett bandwagon on Monday. Don't think we didn't notice.

No Stallion, he is razzing you. Or calling you out b/c it is fun. I dunno.
Either way, I admit to being a little confused. I must read either more of your 7386 posts (good God, man...how much bullsh-t time do you really have???) to find it or maybe pay closer attention in general, but I haven't gotten the impression that you have given Bennett consistent marks in ID-ing talent at all. I recall you noticing on occasion, but I definitely got more of a sense that you were bewildered (makes two of us) as to why he couldn't close the deal (if it wasn't b/c some ridiculous admissions gymnastics was going on). And that really overwhelms any credit you have ever given Bennett. Perhaps I have been dense, but just on sheer number of posts devoted to it, at a glance I imagine it is an easy thing to miss, that is, giving Bennett any credit at recruiting at all. :P

Sounds like a cool job though. Probably pays peanuts, but it shouldn't.
Wonder if, like so much at SMU, it'll be a great idea that doesn't get executed well, and therefore winds up a crappy result?

I was giving my evaluation of what I thought was going to happen, sir. I've maintained that I didn't think Phil was going to survive it. That didn't mean I wanted him gone -- there's a difference.

Now, I did say yesterday, that they better get it done in 2007 or else -- So you can stop putting words in my mouth. I'm sticking with Bennett, but I think you have the foresight to recognize that they better put up or shut up.

And to be frank, I don't know if Phil is signing his first, second or 5th choice. And neither do you.

But I'm semi-serious. If you think you know everything there is to know about recruiting, then go to the staff and lay out your plan. You're pretty much wasting yours and our time on this board firing off evaluations of players you already know everything about.

Maybe you would have the closing skills that somebody on the staff is missing -- as you suggested.

It's all about selling. If you can sell it, they'll come. There is a difference between recognizing the talent and making the case to come to their school. That's where you come in.

You have nothing to lose.
