Not sure, but think he is talking about Rod Beavans from Austin. He was recruited by Ken Hatfield at the last minute by Rice and long before Bennett was at SMU. Think he graduated in 2000 and was recruited in '96.

He was a surprise to even the Rice coaches after they signed him.

Yeah I went back about 6 years and couldn't match a single Rice lineman recruit to the description. Certainly none that were mildly considered decent prospects. If he went to Rice and SMU didn't want him he was probably a sleeper.

It is a story that could be said of any school or coach even at the professional level and in any sport. Whether its Karl Malone who wanted to be a Mav or Rod Beavans who wanted to go to SMU no program is exempt from hinsight analysis that doesn't show mistakes made.

Even Hatfield admitted he hadn't a clue that Beavans would accomplish half of what he did at Rice and almost every class after that he would say he hopes there is at least one Beavens in the bunch.

He is not from Austin.
Graduated in 2003 & enjoyed running the ball up & down the field all day against the Ponies.

I really hope that the Ponies improve their recruiting with the new head coach. It really needs upgraded.
The whole point to the post.

The recruiting coordinator is named by the Head Coach. Let's get a head coach first, and then worry about the recruiting coordinator. A good head coach knows that his job depends on recruiting. That is by far the most important job to fill. Bennett is gone and his legacy will live on for a few more years.

Then he was still prior to Bennett. Most likely Ben Stephens who was a 275 lb OL from Arlington. Ben was a 4.0 and computer science major, played baseball and was a wrestling champ. He became an All-WAC center and was on the early Outland trophy list in 2003.

I could have sworn he had an offer from both TCU & SMU, but sounds like you know differently. I know TCU wanted him and was listed as picking Rice over those 2 programs. With his interests & GPA I don't blame him for picking Rice and really thought academics was the primary reason for going there.

Hatfield made a big deal the Rice beat out those schools at the time.

WF Victory, good stuff !

It was just really poor recruiting. SMU was not in the mix @ all.
I will never understand the situation.

I just hope that the new HC is the type of guy that can really convince the local talent to stay @ home. In addition, a great RC needs to also be in place.

I'm afraid this year we are going to see alot of this type of situation where local talent wants to play for the Ponies however they just don't have the recruiting pieces in place. I hope I'm wrong.

Whoa, EastStang, thanks for waking me up. Doing my Rip Van Winkle routine 'cause I slept thru the time period when Bennett's "sytem" worked.

Uh, when was that? 8)

SMU can't even recruit HP grads who DON'T play sports to go to school there. Check the other posts about how everyone followed Stafford out to Georgia. I'm excited about JJ's TTech guy. Maybe we'll get some West Texas kids in here now.
