Stallion Question

Postby SoCal_Pony » Tue Jan 22, 2008 12:00 am

Stallion, I know you were down on SO and the hiring process because of how the delay impacted recruiting, which was a reasonable position to take.

I also realize it is still very early, but having seen what JJ has accomplished so far, are you as worried tonight about our recruiting class as you were the night of the Sugar Bowl?

Seems to me that at a minimum, we get a better class than PB delivered during his last few years here. Of course that is a pretty low bar, but still I am encouraged.

You are on dangerous ground here SoCal_Pony. You are asking Stallion to back down from one of his pronouncements of doom. I'm not saying he won't change his veiw on this...just that it would be a rare event to say it out loud. That's is also not to say that he hasn't changed his mind...just that he probably won't admit to it straight up. His recent posts speak for themselves.

You know PK...Stallion's 'worst' posts are those where we received commitments from athletes that had no other offers. I always found those extremely amusing as it so contrasted the rah-rah posters.

His concern about the recruiting window was/is legitimate.

I say JJ surpasses anything PB did over the past 3 years.

Jury is still out. We should know more this weekend. We are still diggin' out of a hole-no definite commitments yet from really top commitments. That's really to be expected since Jones said a big group of recruits wouldn't visit until this weekend.

Alex Odiari (who really has been a Phil Bennett initiative) is an extremely significant commitment because its exactly the type of kid who went to our Rivals in the past. If we can get some second semester JUCOs, Division 1A Transfers then the signing date won't be as significant.

The Steve Craft JUCO kid would be great but the second semester started last week and still no confirmation. Ted Gangi at MM.Com said he definitely was a mid term graduate so I'm surprised we haven't heard he enrolled if he is coming although Bo Mitchell apparently confirmed his presence in Dallas-maybe it takes awhile to get his transcript through to actually sign the kid.

I'll trust in Jones evaluation of Bo Mitchell - I'm sure he's looked at hundreds of QBs and he truly had a great senior year with 38 TBs and 4 Ints but quite frankly Jones appears to be the only Division 1A Coach willing to offer Mitchell a scholarship

The Victor Jones kid would be an excellent pickup in any year but he's considering several other schools.

I would like to steal back former SMU commits Nick Sampson(UTEP) and Corey Fuller(TCU) and guys who were closely looking at us like Jarrett Ben(Rice), Lonzie Range (Iowa St)and quite frankly about 3-5 guys NTSU got who were interested in SMU.

Get Craft, Odiari, and Victor Jones and some of the above names and I think that would be a significant step in the right direction.

I can see some good potential on some of the OLM mentioned yesterday but those guys are always around this time of year. Don't know too much about the Hawaii grayshirt except he has tremendous bloodlines. There really isn't any information that I've been able to access that definitely says there a bunch of top recruits ready to jump on board-and I've checked just about every single Rivals report across the country in the last 2 weeks. If they are they probably will be coming in this weekend. Right now we are at No. 112 in the Rivals rankings. Should know a lot more by Sunday afternoon.

Oh I forgot the Hawaii commitment Chris Banjo from Houston who has about 4 offers has definitely stated he is visiting SMU. Good solid CUSA level recruit. He's 5-11, 185 4.5 with offers from Hawaii, Sam Houston State, Air Force, UTEP and Navy

Risking this years' class was about more than just getting a decent class this year. It's about turning this program around. The only guys we could have gotten who had head coaching experience were Franchione, Coker and Barnett and they had a lot of baggage. The Neuheisels and Bowdens of the world were trying to slow play us for better offers.

Stallion seems to be saying that this years' class is the counter-weight to our extended coaching search. If we had to throw away this years' class of high school seniors (especially if we could fill in the blanks with JUCO's later on), it was worth it to bring in a coach who can change the losing culture here.
