JJ uses the R&S to let the pass set up the running play while most teams uses the run to set up the pass. You usually see less running plays in the R&S but more yards per run.
The RB is used as another blocker. It is important for the RB to block first and understand the blocking schemes. But when the RB runs, its usually wide open because the D is concentrating on the pass and are out of position for the run. This is when the RB runs large chunks of yardage. A RB can get a 100 yard game on just 4 or 5 plays in the whole game. Most RBs average 10 yards per run.
Everybody around here acts as if SMU never had any experience with the Run/Shoot. From 1989 to Cavan's regime they ran the Run/Shoot, albeit without JJ & Co. running the show. SMU also got done to with the R/S. Houston...95-21. If somebody has been following SMU for awhile (okay, okay, for those who are younger, you all get a pass), they have seen this offense.
As for RBs, somebody needs to break out like Chuck Witherspoon. That pot-bellied midget could move down the field and punish anything that came in contact with him...up and to the outside. Take your pick. Pray for SMU to have a Chuck a la 2008. "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." The Benediction, Doc Breeden, circa 1992
We have plenty of RBs anyways
