This is why it is too hard to get excited about recruits. The odds of a kid being as good as advertised and making grades is nearly impossible.
That is certainly the case with kids that come to SMU...................... ![]()
Sorry if someone said you failed to live up to whatever expectations were placed upon you, but many SMU students  and student-athletes  fulfill and even exceed theirs.
I spent 5 years working in the SMU athletic recruiting office. I can honestly say that I have worked with many SMU student athletes in that time and it is alot of work to succeed as an SMU student athlete. Because SMU requires that all athletes attend class and pass courses, our SAs must not only be great athletes, but great students too.
With that said, sometimes athletes who come to SMU (with the best intentions on being great students) don't quite measure up in the classrooms on the hilltop. In my opinion, the fact that Mapps didn't cut it is a tragedy and I wish him well, but I think it also is an indicator to show that SMU does require that our athletes be great students too. This makes me smile as an alumni (Cox School of Business 1996) because I know that the integrity of my degree remains strong, and as a fan of SMU athletics because I can take pride in the SMU athletes that did succeed both in the classroom and on the field. Thanks for letting me rant a little. --Texasscout96 SMU Grad 1996 - Worked in SMU athletic recruiting office under Forrest Gregg and Bill Weidner from 1992-1997.
