Bill Foran article

For what it's worth, there's an article in today's Park Cities section of the DMN on Highland Park QB Bill Foran:

Leading a potent offense nets HP senior QB recognition

Running, passing versatility make Foran a college commodity

Here's what it's like to be Highland Park quarterback Bill Foran these days.

You haven't received one recruiting phone call from Oklahoma, the No. 2 college football team in the nation. But when you send a videotape of one of your best performances and a handwritten letter to the coaching staff asking for tickets to the sold-out Texas game, you get them.

Foran can't say whether it was the letter, the tape or luck that the Sooners' coaching staff sent him the tickets. But it's probable that tape of the Stephenville game – and the 447 yards in total offense Foran put up that September afternoon – had more to do with the granted request
than his letter.

The abilities Foran showed against Stephenville in the Scots' 56-42 win on Sept. 14, and against the Scots' other five opponents this season, may end up punching his ticket to college. But for now, the attention from college scouts is fairly minimal, and that's the way Foran and coach Randy Allen prefer it.

Each said college offers would take care of themselves as long as the Scots continue to take care of their business as a team – and that usually means Foran is running and throwing.

"A lot of people just didn't know about Bill before this year," said Allen, whose coaching duties include working with the quarterbacks. "But he's always been a chain-mover. And when a quarterback gets hot with our offensive scheme, he can really pile up the yards."

Expected or not, Foran has been hotter than August in Texas this season. Entering last week's play – before the Scots sat idle for a week – Foran was among the top 20 area Class 4A rushers with 620 yards on 65 carries (9.5 yards per carry). He was the fourth-leading 4A passer in the area with 1,113 yards, completing 73 of his 98 attempts with no interceptions (a near-75 percent completion rate). And he was the top 4A scorer/ touchdown scorer in the area with 94 points and 14 touchdowns.

However, Foran is quick to credit his teammates – particularly the offensive line and running back Colby Hollingsworth. Foran said his wide receivers are catching all his passes, and the line is giving excellent pass protection while providing strong blocking. But Foran said Hollingsworth and his success in 2001 initially opened things up for him at quarterback.

"All the other teams in the area knew about Colby, so they came out at the beginning of the season trying to stop him," Foran said. "That opened things up for me. That's the thing about our offense. We can take advantage of whatever a team gives us."

Hollingsworth said it didn't take him long to get over being keyed on relentlessly when he knew Foran's freedom was the price the defense would pay. He said he's looking forward to the rest of the season knowing that teams can't load up on either player.

"If I was a defensive coach getting ready for our offense, I honestly wouldn't know what to do," said Hollingsworth, who has rushed for 410 yards on 73 attempts. "When the offensive line is blocking well, and Bill is running and throwing the ball, it keeps the defenses totally off-balance."

Allen said Foran's ability to think quickly makes him and the Highland Park offense dangerous. The offense relies on a quarterback who can make split-second decisions regarding when to pass, when to run, when to pitch or what receiver to pick out. And Allen said Foran consistently makes the move that gives a play the best chance to succeed.

"The best way to judge a quarterback is how many times he gets the ball into the end zone," said Allen. "He's bigger and faster this year, he's worked [deleted] becoming a better passer and he's surrounded by teammates that are unselfish and allow him to do his thing.

"But if you could nail it down to one thing, it's that he makes good decisions. That's why he's successful, and that's why our offense has been successful."

Bill Foran is listed in the Morning News as an athlete.
It says he's now considering Georgia Tech, Purdue, Virginia Tech and Illinois.
Does this mean we no longer have a shot?
