How many scholarships do we have to offer this year?
It looks like we are off to a good start this year, with (according to rivals) a 2.38 average as compared to last years 2.08, and already more 3 star recruits than all of last year...

Re: Number of scholarships?I bet PX has the skinny on this. Any insight you can share?
Re: Number of scholarships? Why can't we get an answer to this question?
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Re: Number of scholarships?I've heard we'll have 23 or 24 to offer, but I haven't been able to confirm that.
Re: Number of scholarships?By Corso's math, we have 14 or 15 scholarships remaining (although I thought we had a reduced class this year.)
Anyway, with those 14, here's what I'd like to see: 2 more offensive linemen 3 more defensive linemen 3 safeties 2 linebackers 1 cornerback 2 tight ends 1 wide receiver or a blocking fullback with size And if we have 15 remaining, an "athlete" recruit who could play multiple positions. Re: Number of scholarships?I have no clue how to divy up scholarships. What was the breakdown last year?

Re: Number of scholarships?I think our reduction in available scholarships due to the Malin thing was just a two year deal and no longer affects us. Having said that, there are two restrainst that I am aware of. One, you can't have more than 85 scholarship athletes on the football team in any given year. Two, I think you are restricted to a maximum class size of 25 scholarship recruits each year.
So, assuming we currently have 85 scholarship players, then subtract the number of Seniors that will be gone next fall and that is the number of openings we have unless that number exceeds 25. I count 20 Seniors on the roster minus Cunningham who will be back, which gives us 19. Add to that any players we have lost this year due to quiting the team and transfers and that gives you your number. That's only approximate though since some of the scholarships made available by people quiting/transfering have been given out to others. SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Number of scholarships?and are there any players who are likely to leave the team or transfer at the end of the year?
If so, we should have a full 25 scholarships, I would think.
Re: Number of scholarships?Do not forget bennett has some grey shirts and walk on's he is expecting to give scolies to. He said he would like to reward as many as five a year if warranted and he has a few that have really stepped up.All of that could cut down the numbers. THe cull process will continue but will likely subside after next year.
Re: Number of scholarships?Any idea which walk-ons will get scholarships? I know Bennett really likes some walk-on running back from Houston, but we're going to have a number of RBs on scholarships already, and I'm not sure we need to spend another.
And I didn't know there were gray shirts this year. There were two last year, but they're on the list of scholarship players this year, as far as I know. "It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."
