Ryan Gray and Jamison Newby

Postby SMUguy » Mon Dec 23, 2002 5:41 pm

Ryan Gray, the 6-6, 325-pound OL/DL from Highland Park, has fallen off the SMU radar screen, apparently, but has offers from LaTech, Northwestern and TCU. Are we sure we don't have room for a horse like that?

In Sunday's Dallas Morning News, Jamison Newby listed Purdue, SMU, TCU, Kansas and Rice. But wasn't it reported weeks ago that he already had committed to TCU? Surely Rivals/DMN haven't missed that note. Are we still in the running for this kid?

Don't know about that Newby kid.
But you can't teach a kid to be as big as Ryan Gray. And I read that he made first-team all-district, and that he's good, not just big. Are you sure we can't find room for this big moose? Never seen him play, of course, but if that size is legit, he's got to be a Pony.

The huge offensive linemen like this guy are most often not very athletic. I do not think that he would fit into coach Bennett's scheme. The more athletic OLs like Bryan Turner and Justin Boren are quicker and can run. These guys are the kind you want for a running attack like Bennett has implamented. Running the stretch and other zone blocking type plays your OLs have to be able to run.

Hmmm. I knew Bryan Turner is supposed to be a very quick lineman, but Boren? I thought he was a mauler type. Not necessarily quick, but successful because he can stand there and trade punches with the big boys. Not true?

On another note, has anyone heard anything new on Cedric Cofer? What about you, SmuCommitt - sounds like you're pretty well in touch with what's going on with recruiting. Do you know about Cofer? If you're who I think you are, (a new SMU player), are you allowed to call Cofer and help sell him on SMU?

To the best of my knowledge, Cedric Cofer is still sitting tight on his top five of SMU, Colorado, Iowa, Texas A&M and TCU, although the last report I got suggested that TCU is running fifth. We aren't aware of any clear-cut leader at this point.
