Avery Cleveland not committed. What is the big deal?

Postby Johnny Rock » Thu Jan 16, 2003 5:47 pm

Too much is being made of this. I think it is great that other schools are interested in a player that may sign with SMU. It is proof that SMU is starting to recruit better players. I do not fault Avery Cleveland one bit for wanting to visit TCU. It is a big decision to make on where you will spend the next four or five years of your life. It was not too long ago that several players that ended up at SMU every year where players in which SMU was their only Div. 1 scholarship offer. It is nice to see SMU competing for some of the top players. Also, Avery Cleveland will not make or break SMU's recruiting class. We have several other top players on both sides of the ball, especially at QB and RB. I also would not be suprised to see SMU 'steal' a recruit from another school before signing day. Go Ponies!!!

The coaches are once again doing a great job w/o the benefit of an improved program..Sure it will be but in the meantime they are doing great at selling the dream. Last years crop all had offers from other schools per Bennett. Also it was said to be the best in years. This year the same can be said. Next year, maybe the same. All that is said about the subjectiveness of the system, it is up the coaches to develop the talent once on the field as many of these young men are very close in ability and stats but the proof will be once this next two seasons probably pass. I hope it happens sooner of course. Great Job Coaches,,,keep it up..

It's a big deal because he would be arguably the top recruit in our class and he gives us ammunition to go after other top recruits.

I don't remember anyone saying that last year's class was the best in years, but I don't think last year's class compares at all to the one we're putting together this year. This class has the potential to be an important building block for greater success in the future.

I know Cleveland is just one player -- but you've got to walk before you can run, and guys like Avery and Massey and Meeks definitely give us a step in the right direction.

The big deal is that Cleveland is a very good player, and we'd all rather see him at SMU than at another school.

As a pride factor, it would be annoying if TCU got Avery and that technically put them ahead of us as #3 in the state, but we have to keep our eyes on the future and bigger things.

The progress we're making with this class is staggering. Whether we finish a notch above tcu or a notch behind tcu in this year's class is irrelevant. We're fans of SMU, and the future is blindingly bright. Once the coaches develop the talent we have coming in, everything will fall into place.

I hear alot of talk about TCU. Frankly, Johnny Rock does not care two craps about TCU. I could care less if TCU had the best recruiting class in the country. I care only about what SMU is doing. It is my opinion that SMU needs to start taking care of its own business. I wish TCU the best. But I also would take a [deleted] on its President without thinking twice. With that said, I believe SMU is turning heads this recruiting season. I commend Bennett and his staff for what looks like our best class in years and I'm sure we will get a few more great additions before signing day. Bennett is creating enthusiasm for the program that has not been here in along time. Another sign that we are having success in recruiting is the TCU posters on our board talking smack. Bennett has them running scared. SMU is back!!!
