S Devin Johnson....I noticed that Max Emfinger on his Texas Top 200 listed SMU as in contention for S Devin Johnson 6-4,200 4.4 Amarillo Palo Duro. Considering Tech, SMU, and TCU but I hesitate to rely on Emfinger because moments ago he just announced the startling commitment of Justin Boren which occurred 5 months ago. Well anyway he praise both Boren and Johnson highly. He calls Johnson one of the top cover CBs in the country. This kid is sensational and he is very aggressive player on run support". Rivals has an update on him in December which says he is 6-3,185 4.5 with an impressive 8 INTs as a junior and 69 tackles. Sometimes these West Texas boys fly below the radar screen of the recruiting services. Interesting prospect since we need upgrades in size and speed at S. BTW Insiders now rates Boren a 2 star which correlates more precisely to a 3 star on Rivals.

Re: S Devin JohnsonLook at those numbers! 6'4", 200, 4.4.
There isn't an NFL coach that wouldn't want a DB with those raw numbers, much less a college coach who wouldn't want him. Never heard of the kid, but maybe worth a scholarship? I really shouldn't drink and type.
Re: S Devin Johnsonyea also if he is anywhere close to that size, speed and height he could be redshirted and by the start of the 2004 season you could have a 6-4 or 6-3 LB or maybe(eventually DE) who weighed 225 and ran a 4.5. Very similatr to Clevelands projection. I'd like to hear more about this kid.

Re: S Devin JohnsonIf he has any ability to go with that size and speed, he goes at the top of my Most Wanted List, along with Thomas Derricks, Syndric Steptoe, Kharylake Martin and Courtney Gordon.
Re: S Devin JohnsonJust looked on the fansonly.com network, and they have nothing more on him than what Stallion reported.
They do, however, maintain that Jordan Newman is headed to SMU. Is there any truth to that? Or are they just grossly out of date?
Re: S Devin JohnsonI checked the Amarillo paper and they said he was "close" to qualifying ie he is not qualified. Tech seems to be postponing a visit because of it. UTEP wants him and his coach mentioned TCU. No visits yet which means he might be a gamble due to academic issues. We probably don't need to take that kind of gamble with so few scholarships remaining.

Re: S Devin JohnsonYou think? He sounds like has the potential to be something pretty special.
Of course, we all know you can't get too wrapped up in potential.
