At SMU this weekend

Postby Corso » Mon Jan 20, 2003 2:51 pm

There were 7 players visiting SMU this weekend:

OL Bryan Turner (committed)
DE Desmond Jones (committed)
WR Blake Warren (committed)
DT Brandon Bonds (committed) - he's supposed to be up to 330 now!
DL Charlie Berry (Highland Park)
WR Bobby Chase (Irving)
DB Jason Jones (Killeen)

Does anyone know anything about the last 3 guys? I hear they're trying to get Berry and Chase, at least, as gray shirts (enrolling next January, counting against the class of 2004) or as invited walk-ons. Don't know anything about Jason Jones.

Berry is listed as a 1-star Strongside DE
6'3", 235 lbs., 4.8

Bobby Chase and Jason Jones aren't in the Rivals database... at least not that I could find.

Unless these kids are superstars, I'd hope that they're not going to start dipping into 04 scholarships.

Don't we only have 9 or 10 for next year anyway? Sounds like a bad move if we dip into that total, unless we're talkin' 5-star guys.

I'd think that with the momentum Coach Bennett has begun building, and with a decent year, we might be able to aim at only 4-star guys next year! Well, I can hope anyway.

Chase is supposed to be tall, skinny and really fast. But I don't have any actual numbers .... yet!

Ryan Gray is a monster (6-6, 325) but rumor has it he just doesn't like football. Hope that's not the case - you can't have too many guys that size, eh BUS?

No you can't. My point is that at practice you always see 10 to 20 guys staning around during full speed drills. 1 & 2 O against 1 & 2 D now thats 44 then 3 kickers gone somplace kicking. Make 47.

I would like to see 10 to 15 of the guys waiting their turn ( next year ) be the big boys. Maybe by the time they are Jr's they can play some.

Depending on who we might have a shot at to round out this class, why not take a chance on a guy like Berry? If he's a hard worker, he's got decent size and speed and might become a player in a few years...not to mention he's a local guy (hopefully has lots of family & friends who will attend games?)

As for the comment by PonyFan that next year maybe Bennett can aim for only 4-star guys? Whoa, fella...let's sign our 1st 4-star guy before you start talking that way. Is there a program in the country that can afford to recruit that way? It certainly appears this coaching staff is doing a great job with this year's class, but let's stay in touch with reality. There are plenty of guys out there nobody knows about or aren't wearing that 3-4 star label who can help this football team. Hopefully this coaching staff's relationships with Texas H.S. coaches will help us land our share each and every year.

Well, we can AIM at 4-star guys, right Charleston Pony?

As for founding the out the class with a HP kid, I'd rather see the guy mentioned last week - Jason Wood, who's 6-7 and finished fourth in the state in the high jump -- in other words, he's very athletic. Tight end, linebacker, defensive end - we'll find a place for him.

Wouldn't mind seeing Ryan Gray, either, and see if the coaches can re-light the kid's inner pilot light. Got to have the big fellas!

charley berry is truly the cream of the three you mentioned. He is a really strong player and as mentioned would make a contribution to the team. the others are good kids but not as commotted to football..

I bet Charlie Berry is a hell of a player, but I'm kind of like MustangFan - I'm really intrigued with what Coach Bennett could do with a 6'7" guy who can run and jump. Make him an H-back and roll him in motion on short-yardage and goal line situations, with Jay Taylor on the other side. With their size and jumping ability, the other teams would have to leave their safeties back in coverage, freeing up running room for the RBs. Or, if they pinch up to the line, those two would be unstoppable on jump balls - especially Jason Wood.

We should get that guy, one way or another (scholarship or walk-on).

I've never seen HP play, so I can't really analyze any of these guys, But Wood sure sounds appealing.

Irving WR Bobby Chase would look really good at SMU. He's huge for a wide receiver - 6'4" or 6'5" and between 200 and 210 pounds. He's not a world-class sprinter, but he has very good speed and leaping ability, especially for a player of his size. He's been timed between 4.4 and 4.55 in the 40. Getting him this late in the game would be a coup for SMU.

How can a WR that big and fast be unrated by the recruiting services?
How does he compare to William Dowdy at Denton Ryan?
