Question on recruiting rankings

Postby crazy horse » Mon Jan 27, 2003 9:11 pm

In reviewing some of the recruiting services rankings of our recruits, I am amazed at the diversity of opinion. I personally prefer services that rank by position. It seems to me it is the only ranking that has some objectivity to it. How do you compare a QB to a DE or WR anyway?

Having said that, in looking at Rivals versus Insiders, Rivals has Ricky Joe Meeks for instance as the #27 Pro style QB and Chris Phillips as the #28 Dual threat QB. Insiders combines the categories and neither make it into their top 104 QBs - where the ranking stops. Are these services using different criteria or are they catering to particular schools?

It is not just with SMUs recruits. James Battle received a #8 Dual threat ranking and falls to #40 in Insiders. What gives? That seems like a huge evaluation swing even if you combine the QB rankings.

I actually prefer that Rivals differentiates QB types and linebackers (ILB & OLB).

To me, the star rankings and any average star rankings are basically worthless. But I understand why they use them.

What is more impressive to me is that we have 9 players who rank in the top 70 nationally for their position, with 7 falling in the top 50. That's something to get excited about IMHO.

Any thoughts?

Don't get too excited about any of the recuriting services. A lot of what they base their rating on are stats. If you don't play quality competition your stats are overrated. Tech's 3A quarterback recurit had a rough game in the DFW All Star game playing against 5A competition. For example Phillips had a very bad game againts HP.

As I recall, he ran for a couple of touchdowns against HP. But you're right, his passing game was sub-par that day, because his receivers couldn't get open against the Scots' defense.

He lost 3 fumbles and had 1 interception. Turnovers made a huge difference in the game.

That's true - the fumbles weren't good. But that's because Charlie Berry and the boys were destroying the Lynch offensive line, and Phillips was running for his life. I was just impressed that he lived through the game.

Recuriting rating services do not take in consideration the level of competition. This evaluation can only be done by coaches.
