I'm extremely excited about ALL of the guys we have committed but my question for you is who are you MOST geeked about seeing? I think I'm most excited about Joe Sturdivant the Lilburn,GA safety. An offer from Georgia Tech and flirtations with Florida State give him instant credibility among other schools. He's a big kid at 6-1 190 and reportedly hits like a mack truck. I really like this kid and I think he'll do great things here at SMU!

D-Line players. I understand there is a difference between the way I would build a defense and the way C. Bennett does, but I still want to see two 300 pound cats at DT.
Bonds and then ink Derricks and I'm all good.

...two big fat guys playing DT aren't going to help. That's why for 15 years after we struck out for just about every DT we have recruited(except for maybe Birdwell and Croy) we've signed big, tall DE and OLB and put them on a weight program. You have to have quickness and an athlete at DT-less so on the Offensive Line. I think Sturdivant is going to be a lot like Cary Brabham. It might take him a year or so to get acclimated but once he does you're going to have a solid sure hitter-who will probably be elected team captain.

I don't know BUS, the Bucs in the Superbowl showed us what I think Bennett wants in a defense...quick and strong. The Raiders went with the BIG (as in #95 Adams - the new Refridgerator Perry) and they weren't very effective at all. All the Buc's offensive lineman blocking #95 had to do is let up on his hold and Adams was on the ground on his face. On the few times Adams made it into the backfield, the QB would zoom by him and he would just have to watch...he could barely walk much less run. Nope, give me the quick and strong D-lineman!!!
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Defensive Tackle is probably to toughest position to "recruit". An 18 yr. old kids body is going to make at least one more big transformation before he reaches adulthood. Sometimes that works for DT's...sometimes it turns DT's into OT's. But, you better have some beef up front defensively...preferrably with a nasty attitude. Size is definatly "in" for DT's..and so is depth at that position. Look for that Cooper Bulldog to help in the depth department.

In no particular order:
QBs Ricky Joe Meeks and Chris Phillips
RBs Richuel Massey and Fred Turrner
OL Justin Boren
DL Desmond Jones
LB Avery Cleveland
DBs Ervin McGee and CD Moss
Nothing like covering my bases, right?

I think Joe Sturdivant will help address the team's Achilles heal at safety, although I have no idea how quickly he'll be ready. His shoulder is (or at least was) banged up a bit, and I have no clue what his timetable will be. I do know the kid's a fighter (and a winner), so I don't have any worries on that account.
I received a reel of Justin Boren's Sr. year. As such, I'm more familiar with him than most of our other recruits. In a tough division, this kid brutalized defenders. I think he'll have to work on lowering his hips to take on stronger college DLs, but I'm pretty sure he's unfamiliar with the concept of going backwards. So I'd have to say, right now I'm most excited about seeing Boren.
Honorable Mention: Massey. A kid that fast and that strong just has to be serious entertainment.

Zach and Meeks, two 3-Stars who committed early; creating instant creditability to this class. I suspect that leadership, intensity and dedication will also show itself on the football field.

My #2 is Avery Cleveland. Anyone who sticks it to TCU is okay in my book.

Jaymond Cleveland went to the High School All-America game to take part in the PlayStation competition — and he won the thing. So we have a national champion coming in. (And he's a Gander from Baytown Lee! Which is where I went)
