Re: Dallas Morning News feature on Arkansas' impending NC2A verdict... to even hint that the Razorback$ might get the death penalty is ridiculous. SMU will hold that distinction forever (and ever).

You're right. I have it from a very reliable source that in the aftermath of the SMU fiasco, David Berst, then director of enforcement for the NCAA, said we would never see the death penalty handed down again. He admitted the NCAA grossly underestimated the financial impact to the university. At that time, SMU's enrollment, annual giving and endowment were all dramatically reduced.

IMO the death penalty was (is) a permanent blot on SMU. I suspect that support from the Dallas business community must be relatively a lot less than before and from the general populace as well. There are probably many alumni who never started contributing to athletic program support and potential local fans who found other weekend activities. I don't believe the present situation can be blamed entirely on the poor product since SMU football began again.

The Death Penalty doesn't have a thing to do with SMU's current problems-the kids we are recruiting were 1 year old at the time. It is simply an excuse used by those who will never admit that SMU's Model created the current mess! Well all of you got your Model-now live with it! Is it going to be 20, 25, 30 or maybe 50 years before some of you admit that SMU is not competitive because of the school's own admission policies.

I thought the story in the DMN was very good, and seemed very thorough.

Stallion: granted the ridiculous restrictions Pye put in place when we 1st returned from the death penalty hurt this program through the 90's, but I don't see any significant restrictions in place today. I really didn't follow our recruiting during the strong 80's run. Did we bring in JUCOs on a regular basis and did we offer degree programs we no longer offer that made that possible?

We had a physical education major then that we dont have now. When all the football players transferred away after the DP, there was barely a handfull of people that wanted to be PE majors, and it wasnt economically viable to keep a major that only 4-5 people wanted to take.
We signed a couple JC players each year in those days. Nothing extravagant, but one or two here and there. In 1986, we signed almost a dozen, I think, because we had to. The probation prior to the DP took prohibited offering ANY new scholarships after Dec. 30th, so we couldnt sign any high school players that year, except as walk-ons. So they picked up several JC kids, because they had an earlier signing date. Also picked up one guy from UTA, when they dropped their football program.

Fact is JUCOs and other transfers(because a major issue is transfer hours) were an integral part of our program. Would we have won the SWC in 1982 and gone undefeated without Clarence McDade, Eddie Radford, Jackie Wilson, Norm Reavis, Mark Crites, Jeff Brown, Doug Hollie, Mitch Willis, Tom Linebarger, Ben Wise, et al? They all made large contributions helped us patch holes in our roster. The BB Team also benefitted under Bliss from top talent like Carlton McKinney and Eric Longino.

Carlton transferred here from Tulsa, not a junior college.

I dont think Mitch Willis transferred from anywhere. I believe he came here as a freshman and stayed for 5 years. You may be thinking of Joe Phillips, who was a transfer, and played the same position.

I agree that we need to pursue the JC avenue much more than we have in recent years, but I really dont understand why you're saying we cant take transfers from other 4 year schools. I can name at least a dozen athletes on our current teams that transferred to SMU from other schools. They came from all over, Univ. of Houston, Univ. of Texas, TCU, and from as far away as Univ. of Portland, Vanderbilt, and Indiana. If Thomas Derricks had chosen to come to SMU, there wasnt anything in his way. SMU gets a number of players transferring here, every year, in several different sports.

Arkansas was caught big time but nothing will come of it. Broyles has been around too long and has plenty of insider advantage with the NCAA.

The penalties Arkansas enacted were laughable at best. Reduce the number of recruit visits by 1 a year and things like that.

Arkansas would be a perfect team to hit with the death penalty. Small school in a small state with a weak Congressional representation (yes, that means no hearings on the NCAA). The SEC could easily survive without Arkansas as Arkansas Bball is way down and the football team isn't a huge draw (outside the state of Arkansas). It would help give the NCAA a little more creditability and bit if it hit another school with the death penalty.

The NCAA should do something significant to Arkansas but I fear nothing will happen.

It would be interesting to see what the death penalty would do to a larger public university.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I'd love to see a BCS school get it. I'm sick of being known only for the DP.
