Two new players showing interest

Postby Lotus » Mon Jun 16, 2003 10:43 am

Fort Worth (North Crowley) WR/S Matt Panfil (6-2, 190, 4.5) is listing SMU as one of his top two choices. He plays both receiver and safety in HS, and projects at either position in college, depending on which school signs him -- he' getting interest on both sides of the ball (although he's been more productive on defense). Panfil caught eight passes for 201 yards as a junior and recorded 81 tackles with one interception in 2002.

So far, his two favorites ("high interest") are SMU and TCU. He also claims to have medium interest in Colorado State, Oklahoma State, Rice and Texas Tech.

Also joining the list of players with interest in SMU is Brownwood safety (and occasional running back) William Shaffer (5-10, 190, 4.55). Shaffer recorded 104 tackles with two interceptions in 2002. He will also see action at tailback for departed senior Freddie Stoglin.

Shaffer is projected as a safety in college.

He claims to have five early co-leaders at this point: SMU, Rice, Texas Tech, Southwest Texas and TCU.T

Panfil sounds like he has a good combination of size and speed.

Shaffer seems a little small, for either position. If he was faster, maybe he could be a slot receiver, but that's a little small for a safety, isn't it? For my taste, I want safeties who are in the Rico Harris size range (like the kid from Mesquite - Duncan).

I agree - based on the raw numbers (since I've never seen either play), Panfil seems like he has "more upside" (sorry - always wanted to work that into a post) than Shaffer does.

In terms of size, Panfil might be more appealing. But in terms of production, Shaffer seems to have an edge.
Which then leads to the question: which is more important?
