Another WR for Texas

Postby ClassOf81 » Wed Jun 25, 2003 10:38 am

UT got a commitment from Chris Ogbonnaya (6'1", 200, 4.46) of Houston (Strake Jesuit), Texas. This gives them FIVE receivers in this year's class. Does this mean Kenton Thornton is NOT headed to Austin with his brothers?

It's not like they don't already have a bunch of stud receivers down there, waiting on these new kids to arrive. I'd think they have to be near their limit at the position.

Then again, Thornton's dad played for the Cowboys, so maybe he could afford to walk on? Maybe his parents would pay the tuition, looking at it as a 3-for-1 deal on tuitions for their sons.

If Texas gets Kenton Thornton as a walk-on, there should be an investigation.

Does this mean Massey will get the same offer from UT that his brother did, i.e., "we'd love to have you come walk on?"

Hopefully, Richuel will love his 1st year SMU experience and little brother will follow in his footsteps.

I've read that many believe Kenton's future is NOT at WR.

Possibly TE or even DE.

So don't count 'em out yet.

If he could add the weight necessary to become a TE or DE, he might surprise everyone. He's already got the height and speed - with another 30 or 40 pounds, he could be a monster at DE. I've seen him play football and basketball, and he's an amazing natural athlete.

Re: Kenton Thornton

If you're 6'5 205, can run a 4.5 flat, have great leaping ability and can catch everything in the county, why on earth would you shift to TE or DE? That combo of size, strength and speed makes Thornton an elite WR prospect at any level.

If he's moved to TE, his lack of bulk would negate his speed advantage - he'd have a hard time getting off the line against even an average DE. Of course, if he bulks up he might look like a TE or DE, but...

Thornton is a proven commodity at WR. If he were to add 60 or 70 lbs., that certainly wouldn't guarantee that he'd be successful at TE or DE. The skill sets are different. If he lost speed while bulking up, he'd become more the norm rather than the exception.

BTW,

It's a darn shame that the former coaching admin. blew it so bad with the Thornton family.

As a family, they're like the fighting Adami clan. Sure would have been great to see all these kids in Blue/Red rather than burnt orange.

I agree - if he gets thicker and stronger, which he will, he would be an unbelievable WR. Being muscular and strong hasn't exactly hurt Terrell Owens or David Boston.
