DT considering SMU

Postby Lotus » Thu Jun 26, 2003 12:34 pm

Elris Anyaibe (6-3, 275, 4.8) plays center at DeSoto, but also will play defensive tackle this year.

GPA: 3.6
SAT: 950

Desoto coach Meadows on Anyaibe: "He can play any position on the offensive line and would make a super center. He's exactly what you're looking for in an offensive lineman...he's a horse. We moved him to center after our first two gaems and he settled down the entire line. "But because of his athleticism," Meadows continued, "we switched him over to defensive tackle and plan to use him there this season. He's just outstanding at it. We're going to try to keep him there, but I think we're going to need him to play both ways for us. Don't really want to do that, but he's so good at both that we could really use him both ways."

So far, he's listing interest in Arkansas, Army, Colorado State, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Maryland, SMU and Syracuse. So far, only Army has offered.

Glaring omission from that list: Vincent Chase.
I'm also a little surprised Jonathan Lindley isn't on that list.

That list is incomplete - or invalid - without Vincent Chase.

I don't know if SMU has a shot at them, but Kellen Heard and Walter Thomas are the two best high school linemen I've ever seen.

There are reports out there that suggest Burnet WR Jordan Shipley is wavering on his commitment to UT.

On that list, there are 7 guys (that I know of) who have been mentioned to have at least some level of interest in SMU. Picture them with Vincent Chase, Bobby Chase and Jonathan Lindley.

Alan Davis , DE/TE, Colleyville Heritage, 6-3, 240, 4.85
Ryan Young , OT, Waco University, 6-7, 300, 5.2
Martel Vanzant , CB, Tyler Lee, 6-2, 190, 4.6
Eddie Rollman, OL, Burnet, 6-4, 300, 5.4
Cedric Peterson, S, Dallas Sunset, 6-1, 200, 4.6
Jesse Henderson, RB/DB, Paris, 5-8, 165, 4.4
Elris Anyaibe, C/DT, DeSoto, 6-3, 275, 4.85

Talk about the makings of an impressive class!

It would be great to see that many top guys end up at SMU. But recruiting is a long way from over. It's possible none of those will sign, and that the coaches end up signing a bunch who aren't even considering SMU yet. (C.D. Moss didn't list SMU until December).

man its been a long time since we've been competitive if you think having interest from 7 in the Top 100 is good.

Go back 4-5 years, and there weren't half that many top 100 guys interested - maybe none at all. I'd say that's an indication of progress, but if you'd like to remain pessimistic, feel free. I, for one, prefer to see the improvement that Coach Bennett has made with the program, and realize that as the recruiting season wears on, he'll get more top guys interested. We're not going to be able to pick and choose from 5-star guys overnight. There's a growing process involved with recruiting, as well as with the performance on the field. Coach Bennett and his staff have laid the foundation for an exceedingly bright future at SMU. I can't wait for the season.

This would be a terrific signing if SMU does in fact land Anyaibe. His technique on the offensive line is superior to that of almost all high school offensive linemen, he has the athletic ability and strength and versatility to play each offensive line position and he has a thorough understanding of blocking schemes. His success on the defensive line will come largely from the fact that he's bigger and stronger than most of the players he faces, and that he has good quickness for his size.

He could have considerable success in college on either line. But I don't think he's done growing, and if he adds any more height - and 20-30 pounds - he could flourish into a premier college defensive lineman.
