SMU has moved into the picture with the No. 91 player in the state according to Rivals. Campbell is a 5-8, 180 4.4 athlete from Converse Judson that could play several positions. He has a high 2 star rating at 5.4 Also considering Utah, Colorado, Minn, Okl. St. A&M, Penn St. and Baylor.

This is a Phil Bennett-type of athlete if there ever was one. Think about all the small kids he got out of Texas who played at A&M, OU, Kansas State, and became successful college players because they're amazingly fast. Campbell is that kind of player. Different sources project him at various positions, but I think he'll be an outstanding kick return guy and RB. Some see him as a slot WR, but I like his balance and power, and his vision coming out of the I-formation, and his hands need to improve before you make him into a receiver. He certainly has the speed to play in the secondary, although most of his experience has been on offense.

He's a little like Jessie Henderson in the fact that he's fast -- extremely fast. That 4.4 migght even be slower than he really is (I've seen him listed even in the high 4.2s, so you should figure he's somewhere in between.)

SMU is a late entry into the race for this guy, so it will be a serious uphill climb to get him. Along with the schools "Stallion" listed in the previous post, he also has expressed interest in LSU and Texas. My understanding is that LSU likes him, but that UT isn't spending much (if any) time recruiting him - they seem to have other RB targets. If those other targets commit elsewhere, the UT coaches might reasses their impression of Campbell.

I don't use a "star" system like many recruiting services do, but to equate to those systems, I would rate Campbell a 3 (-star), at least. For a short guy, he has tremendous power in his legs, he runs very hard and has the breakaway speed coaches covet. There's also speculation that he might grow another couple of inches - which would eliminate many schools' doubts about him - and certainly will add more weight and strength. With improved receiving skills, he could end up being special.

(And not to sweat over details, but I believe he spells it "Chancy" instead of "Chauncy" -- I'll doublecheck.)

it pretty obvious that Rivals has toughened up its requirements for 3 star status considerably since it introduced to secondary rating system(ex. 5.4). For example last year they had near signing date at least 160 3 stars or above from Texas. This year some Top 100 kids don't get 3 stars. I think its good though that they differentiate between a highly recruited 2 star and a "warm body" 2 star. In the past almost everybody got at least a 2 star so I think it was a little deceptive.

Couldn't agree with you more! I never thought 5 was a high enough number of "levels" for ranking prospects, which is why I don't use that system.
