According to the Time-Picayune in New Orleans, SMU has recruited a top 25 La player
OL JOEY FONTANA
Brother Martin
6-4, 280
The lowdown: Talented technician, enjoyed an outstanding senior season despite dislocating an elbow and tearing two tendons in the joint during participation in LSU summer camp in July. Injury required surgery, but Fontana returned as the top drive-blocker for a squad that had first undefeated regular season in school history and first outright district title since 1972. Three-year starter at tackle, projects as a center or guard in college. Rated as the nation's No. 9 center prospect by Scout.com, No. 15 by Rivals.com. Bench presses 315 pounds, squats 500 and power cleans 285; runs 40 in 5.1 seconds. Fully qualified academically. Has a 3.3 core grade-point-average, 23 on the ACT.
Coach says: "He's relatively athletic for an offensive lineman. If I didn't need him on offense, I would have let him play defense. He's gone through his growing pains, but he's a real hard worker. He's always here early and stays late. He's athletic and has a lot of flexibility for a big kid." Brother Martin Coach Jay Pittman.
Status: Committed to SMU in mid-August and remains firm in his commitment. Tulane and Stanford were other finalists. Other offers included Arkansas, Nebraska, Kentucky, Southern Mississippi, Louisiana Tech and Central Florida. Also recruited by LSU, Alabama, Vanderbilt, Kansas State and Oklahoma.
And he is a big man just for BUS.
