5 - 10" is perfectly fine for a CB. In fact, CB's over 6 feet sometimes have trouble turning their hips around in time to stay with fast receivers.

However, as for safeties and every other postion on the field - height is a huge plus.

Corner is a position that requires special skills. Quite often the CB is the most athletic player on the field. HS kids recruited as athletes usually turn into CB's with WR a close 2nd. 6-2 corners are rare because there are so few with size that can also start/stop, rotate, or turn and run with D-1 wide-outs. That is why 6-2 usually = WR or S. I'm as big of an SMU fan as anyone but looking at recruiting realistically, if there is a 6-2 corner that can do those things he is probably heading to a more prominant program.

Speed and athletic ability can help make up for a lack of size. Raven's safety Jim Leonard is a good example. He plays safety on one of the better defenses in the NFL. He is 5-9 and a former walk-on at Wisconsin. They can be found out there.

In the 1970s, the average Top 10 tennis player (male) was 5'7.

Today it's 6'1.

So, does that mean all of the good cornerbacks are now playing tennis?
