My thoughts....

Postby Johnny Rock » Fri Dec 12, 2003 4:53 pm

It appears that SMU'S commitments so far are a pretty impressive group in comparision to past SMU recruits. The group can certainly hold its own. Does anyone know if we are holding out for a few high quality recruits with the remaining scholarships to give or are we going to get recruits that have only one or two Division 1-A offers as Cavan was usually forced to do. Another question...is there a recruit we are going after that would make headlines if we got him? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I hope I made sense.

we got off to a torrid start but I feel that things are really going to have to break perfectly for us to have a recruiting class close to last year. Things NEVER go perfect in recruiting when you are going after the top kids with 5-6 options. We are in on some kids that could make that happen like the DLM McClinton kid, QB Scott Elliot, CB David Haynes and one of the hottest recruits out there in RB DeMyron Martin . But we don't seem to be in on the depth of tha top players to pull off a strong recruiting class. We've offered about 3-4 OLM and 2-3 LBs most of whom are small and lightly recruited. I think its particularly instructive to see how many kids we have offered who really seem to be marginal prospects. Too bad because if the correct decision was made a couple of years ago to recruit 3-4 top JC players a few years ago we could have won 4-5 games this year and Bennett would have had the momentum necessary to continue his recruiting success. One big advantage Bennett has over Cavan is the early commits most of which appear solid-Cavan never had that option so when his program lost momentum he didn't have guys like Chase, Lindley and Henderson already on board to salvage the recruiting year. 0-12 is a big hole to dig out of and right now I'm skeptical that Bennett will be able to do it with this class. One positive is that we don't have many ships left to offer this year so a couple of great kids could really make a difference.

Patterson said that TCU is holding back on several names at the risk of exposing them to higher profile programs. Any similar words coming from our coaches?

Who's Scott Elliott? Where's he from? How big is he? Got any stats?

I heard we were in on a couple of "Athlete" prospects who are very highly regarded. I also hear we are still in with a QB prospect who we all wrote off – but I guess we're still in the hunt for him after all.

Scott Elliot is the QB from Bay City who committed to Tulane long ago but is still considering SMU. He had a great year come crashing down in the 4A State Championship against North Crowley. Threw about 4 Ints and had a poor completion percentage but he really did have a nice year to get that far.

Elliott isn't one of the QBs I've heard we're pursuing. Of course that doesn't mean much; we may or may not be after him. He just isn't one of the few names I heard.

Despite the bad day against North Crowley, do you know his numbers for the season? How big/fast is he? Other offers besides Tulane?
