VERY interesting DMN article

Postby Horseshoe » Fri Dec 19, 2003 12:51 am

Read Friday's article that's hooked up through the home page about the three JUCO signees. A few things jumped out at me.

1. "I think we made some headway," Bennett said. "Our people have been working hard to get this done. We won't be a JUCO oriented program, but I would like to take three or four a year."
Three or four a year? Assuming that starts next year, that's a HUGE boost, especially for the offensive line and defensive line, where you can sign kids who arrive on campus with pre-formed strength and maturity. (Somewhere BUS is probably popping a bottle of champagne....)

2. The quarterback signings give SMU eight on the depth chart.
EIGHT? Chris Phillips, Tate Wallis, Ricky Joe Meeks, Jared Romo, Tony Eckert, Ashton Nixon, Duke Hasson and Ryan Rowland. That's a lot. Of those, six (Phillips, Wallis, Meeks, Romo, Eckert and Nixon) are on scholarship.

3. Also, Bennett said he would make an offer to an offensive coordinator this weekend .... He interviewed two candidates on Wednesday for a total of five.
So maybe we have a new guy by the weekend. That can only help on the recruiting front. A lot. And I guess it puts to rest the idea of waiting until the coaches' convention before a decision is made.

The article also mentioned that the 2 JUCO QBs came from wide open offenses. Might this be an indicator of the type of OC we're about to hire? Todd Dodge?

Trust me, after the last two years, six quarterbacks on scholarship still isn't enough to make Bennett sleep at night.
The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.

I'm not sure. Coach Bennett has said all along that he wants to open up the offense a lot more, considering defenses looked at us last year like "KK and 10 other guys." But I don't know that the addition of these QBs means necessarily that SMU is going to look like Air Coryell next year. (Sure would be entertaining, though, huh?) Coach B has said from Day One that he wants to be pretty balanced -- which to us will look like the pass-happy BYU offenses of the 1980s.

So when recruiting starts for next year, will certain positions be prioritized for JUCO targets, or will it be a "best player available" situation?
