Wilton McCray-State Champion

Postby Stallion » Sat Dec 20, 2003 8:14 pm

playing what announcer Randy McIlvoy called an outstanding game, LB Wilton McCray's LaMarque team beat Denton Ryan 43-35 in TRIPLE OVERTIME. I missed about a quarter and a half of the game but I saw him make at least 7 tackles. After watching him I feel almost sure he will be a SS in our defense. Even though he isn't too tall-about 6-1- he is lanky with skinny legs. He appears to be a real headhunter who consistently made 3 steps to the line to plug holes. They also put him at FB late in the game and he had no trouble sticking his head right in the gut for a key block. He plays along side of a Michael Singletary clone in Rashard Bobino who is headed to UT. Even though Denton Ryan top RB got a little over 100 yards it took him about 37 carries and 3 OTs to do it. McCray also punts for LaMarque.

I don't know anything about the kid aside from what I read here when he committed, but it's always good to have guys who know winning. I remember reading comments from Coach Bennett in last year's Recruiting Roundup about how a large portion of the 2003 class came from state champion or at least playoff teams -- that trend will carry over as these guys come in expecting to win, not just hoping it might be possible.

does he have the speed to play the SS position in college? I like the idea of a hard hitting safety to give our opponents recievers something to think about when they come into the middle of the field.

#5 looked damn good out there. I look at him and say is that a guy that can help us compete with TCU? I'd say yes.

Will FOX Sports replay the game? I would love to see it.

Yeah, I'd say he does have the speed to play SS. Another LB (Bobino - headed to Texas) got a lot of the announcers' attention, and rightly so -- he was impressive. But McCray got a lot of talk, too. As Stallion said, he seemed more than willing to stick his head in there and make plays. Looks like a really tough kid, and he can really cover some ground. I bet with a couple years under Coach Faucette, he could pump up to around 215 or 225 and be one studly SS. I'd like to see him get a shot at it, anyway. (If not, he'll be a really quick OLB.)

Yeah, Coach Bennett is a big believer in that theory, and so am I. Can't have too many winners on board.
