From Wikipedia: Justin Gatlin, who ran 9.85 s for a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic 100 metres, has a verified 40-yard dash best of 4.42 s.

I think Wikipedia's off a little there...I'd think these are verified (probably laser timed) 40's and there are 3 under 4.4, from this years' NFL combine. that being said, it shows how truly special a 4.4 is. take a look at the verticals, some pretty impressive numbers. jarrett dillard at 42.5" and several offensive lineman above 30", that's incredible

I believe that it would mean that Gatlin's speed did not taper off on the remaining distance after the initial 40 yards. A 4.4 is definitely special...a sustained "4.4" is the really special part.

For true sprinter 4.4 for the first 40 meters is good. Most coaches teach the runner to keep his start relaxed and get into his stride, then start to pick it up about 50 meters and then turn it on the last 35 meters. Most of your speed will be in the last 30 meters. Most football player run at a start stop start pace and need to be able to start quick, so a 4.5 40 would be ok to good.

Based on an interview on the Rivals site, it sounds like we might not need to worry too much about his speed anyway. Sounds like a kid who looked up "commitment" on Wikipedia instead of in Webster's.
