Saw something over the weekend where Tennessee was going to start pursuing him harder now since it lost out to USC in the Scroggins sweepstakes.

But that’s good for us that a BCS -- SEC school -- wants someone that we have. Speaks to June’s ability to evaluate QBs better than I gave him credit for. This is going to be a tough one for us to hang on to. The challenge for us is to hang on to him with excellent communication of selling the idea of playing time and taking the program to BCS buster status to fighting a numbers game at a BCS school. But I also think that send some shockwaves to other prospects we are looking at. They may say, heck SEC schools want QBs Jones is recruiting, time to start talking more with Jones.

As for the Scroggins thing, the idea that made contact with him and offered is good. It could be recruiting for down the road. We should be talking to him up until the week before signing day to keep that impression with him. If the scenario plays out to where he gets lost and eventually transfers from USC, he may recall the rapport he developed with us and seriously consider coming to SMU because of that relationship.

You just never know.

DeSmet moves to 2-0 with a win behind Hill

SPANISH LAKE — When the skies opened up on Saturday and the rain started falling, DeSmet senior running back David Hill knew he would have a significant role in the Spartans' game at Hazelwood East.

Hill turned East's swampy Gorzynski Field into the setting for the best game of his life, rushing for 203 yards and two touchdowns and leading DeSmet to a dominating 38-0 victory over the defending Missouri Class 5 champions.

"As soon as it started raining," Hill said, "I knew we were gonna try to run the ball a lot."

A punishing 5-foot-11, 215-pounder, Hill is now the go-to guy in the backfield for DeSmet (2-0), the No. 8 team in the Post-Dispatch large-school rankings, after rushing 21 times for 90 yards during a junior season plagued by a dislocated shoulder.

"David's not a surprise to us," DeSmet coach Pat Mahoney said. "I think he'll be a surprise to other people. David Hill is one of the hardest-working kids we've ever had. At the J.V. level he was just a monster. Last year he probably would have started at the beginning of the year (before the injury) because he was the guy that was doing the best job."

DeSmet scored its first touchdown on a 6-yard pass from Steve Kaiser to Teddy Corwin in the first quarter. Hill broke loose for a 61-yard run in the second quarter to set up a 2-yard touchdown by Kaiser on a quarterback sneak.

The visiting Spartans led 20-0 at halftime after sophomore Durron Neal took a short pass along the sideline and turned it into a 38-yard touchdown reception with 23.8 seconds left in the second quarter.

Hill, who had 110 yards on 11 carries in the first half, scored touchdowns on DeSmet's first two series in the third quarter. He broke free for a 48-yard TD run, running over a helpless defensive back in the process, and then added a 4-yard TD run.

When junior Malcolm Agnew scored on a 4-yard touchdown run with 2 minutes, 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter, the Spartans held a commanding 38-0 advantage and the running clock was started.

Hazelwood East, ranked 10th among area large schools, fell to 0-2 on the season after losing at CBC 38-28 last week. The Spartans were limited to just 54 total yards — including only three passing yards — and one first down in the game. DeSmet has outscored its first two opponents by a combined score of 76-0 as the defense has yet to allow a point against Mehlville and Hazelwood East.
