I realize he's only 5'8", but surely this guy has to feel good about coming to SMU - we've got a decent history of sending people with his name to the pros

EastStang wrote:Question, on kickers. With all the recruiting our soccer team does and all the guys who try to walk onto the soccer team, wouldn't it be wise to try and get a few of those guys to try out for kicker on the football team and save a scholarship.

JJ opted for 2 kickers on scholarship. If he wanted to save a scholarship he could have refused the transfer from TAMU who came in after receiving the committment from Loftus. I personally think the kicking game is sometimes overlooked and critical to special teams and the defense. I believe their value will be instrumental to any future success.

Tried that years ago, when the football and soccer teams shared Daniel Hernandez, who was the national (soccer) player of the year as a senior. During his junior year, he played both sports, and the travel wore him out. He'd play soccer Friday, fly somewhere for a Saturday football game, and then fly back to join the soccer team for a Sunday game. He had the strongest leg at SMU in the last 20 years (first field goal in practice was good from 55 yards - using his left foot), but his academics and his performance in both sports suffered a lot ... thus ending the two-sport arrangement between those two sports.

Pretty sure gilbert is a senior this year....maybe we could get him in the 09 class

You are right, Gilbert is a 2009 recruit.

Scout and Rivals list him in the 2010 class. I don't have time to fact check the lists, I just combine and post.

I see shades of Colt Brennan in QB Parker Bridwell's highlights and K Cade Foster would fulfill any future need for assassin kickers.

As far as Chris Johnson goes, it looks like he is a kid that just wanted to stay at home in San Antonio. He also turned down two Big 12 offers and an offer from UTEP.
