SMU moves to No. 1 team in C-USA

SMU received its 14th commitment of the 2011 recruiting class on Monday from three-star Rowlett DE Zach Wood and that pledge resulted in the Mustangs' movement to the top of Conference USA in Scout.com's team recruiting rankings.
With the addition of three-star defensive end Zachary Wood's verbal on Monday, SMU climbed to No. 49 in Scout.com's team recruiting rankings, good for first place among Conference USA schools.
Wood's commitment moved the Mustangs one spot ahead of No. 50 Houston. Rice (No. 61) and Central Florida (No. 63) are the next two C-USA schools, followed by Tulane (No. 72), Tulsa (No. 73), and Southern Miss (No. 74).
10 of SMU's 14 commitments, led by four-star OLB Devon Moreland and three-star Jonathan Yenga, are slated for duties on the defensive side of the ball. The Mustangs are solid at defensive tackle, with the powerful duo of Rishaad Wimbley and Darrian Wright. Things are equally bright at defensive end, thanks to the trio of Jarrett Spencer, Robert Seals, and Wood.
Yenga and Moreland are joined at outside linebacker by underrated Cameron Smith, who has the perfect blend of size and speed at 6-foot-2, 230 pounds, with a 4.55 in the 40-yard dash. Cornerback Rodney Hubert and safety Derek Longoria are the remaining defensive commits. Longoria is an intriguing prospect who doubles as a standout punter for Brownwood. He hopes to compete for that role at SMU.
At this point, the Mustangs will be looking to fill in some of the remaining spots with wide receivers. One of the key targets at that position is Nyle Johnson, who will be visiting the campus this week.
