DALLAS (SMU) - Cailin Bula and Abbey Bybel signed national letters of intent Wednesday to play volleyball at SMU beginning with the 2012 season.

"We are very excited about the addition of Cailin (Bula) and Abbey (Bybel)," head coach Lisa Seifert said. "The 2012 class will more than complement those players we have returning."

Bula, a 6-2 outside hitter from Austin, Texas, led Westlake High School to a No. 10 ranking in the country and a No. 3 ranking in Texas. She was second on the team with 3.2 kills per set during her senior season. She finished her career with 363 kills during her final season. She also had 313 digs with 44 aces and 30 blocks. As a junior, she had 311 kills and 119 digs. She also scored 68 service aces and blocked 40 attacks. Bula has led her club volleyball team, the Austin Juniors, to the USA Nationals each year.

"Cailin (Bula) is a very smart six rotation outside hitter. She can ball handle and put the ball away on both pins with either power or by executing a shot," Seifert explained.

Abbey Bybel led White Oak High School with 638 kills as a senior, leading the team to a 40-3 record. The 6-0 middle blocker also had 284 digs and 78 blocks during her final season at White Oak. She also led the team to a State Championship as a junior, scoring a team-high 507 kills during the year.

Bybel has twice been named First Team All-State and was the 2009 East Texas Player of the year. She was named MVP of the 2009 2A State Championship Tournament, leading White Oak to the semifinals. She was also named District 18-2A MVP in 2009 and earned First Team All-District honors all three seasons. Bybel plays club volleyball for the East Texas Juniors.

"Abbey will be a force in the middle. She is a prototypical middle with great arm speed," stated Seifert. "She will be able to score both offensively and defensively with her blocking ability."

Bybel has led White Oak to the regional semifinal in this year's 2A state playoffs, while Bula and Westlake have advanced to the regional semifinals in the 5A tournament.
