It is premature to judge SMU's recruiting classes with our WAC foes. Most, if not all, of our WAC foes add several JUCO and transfers every year to help their teams in addition to the high school players. The last several years SMU also has had trouble keeping recruits around for four or five years. It amazes me the lack of senior and junior production on this years team. I will be impressed if Bennett can keep most of his recruits in school for four years without them quitting or transferring. I sure hope SMU gets a few more JUCO players and transfers for next year. I believe Bennett said he did not give all of his scholarships last year due to many players expressing interest in transferring to SMU from other schools. We will see....

PK,

I believe our administration is directly responsible for that 0-12 record, more so than Bennett. And when I say it has taken the momentum away from Bennett, I do not mean in the context of some specific event that occurred this year. I mean in the context that they stacked the deck against him from day one.

During the 4 years I attended SMU we had the highest winning percentage in all of college football. Spare me the naïve response that it was because we cheated (that is not directed at you PK, but at other posters). Instead answer me this….how many of the top 50 programs DIDN’T cheat. I say they all cheated and yet we somehow we managed to be the winningest program in all of football. Conclusion being it takes more than a Trans-Am to get a kid to spend 4 years in College Station when he has the opportunity to live in Dallas.

Today we are the absolute worst program in America and have been for close to 18 years. Has there ever been a more dramatic falling from grace in all of sports? I don’t think so. But, hey I got a solution…let’s fire the coach!!!!!

Be careful when you bite down...hate to see you lose your tongue.

Well you really can't blame the current admin for the actions of Pye which set up the situation of the faculty senate having waaaay too much say in the recruiting process. Turner has worked to get thinks loosened up and currently Bennett has the best situation for recruiting we have had in a long time. That's not to say we don't still have farther to go to get to Stallion's level playing field. I'm not ready to throw in the towel on this next recruiting class yet. We still have three and a half months to go on recruiting.

I don't believe he criticized Turner directly-he referred to the administration. I hope Turner is still finding ways to make SMU more competitive but when it come right down to it it simply another excuse. It has now been 18 years since the DP, and Turner has been around what 7-8 years? Turner didn't seem to have any problems approving the firing of 2 head coaches who suffered under those policies or pronouncing the Commitment 4 to 5 years ago. Considering this program has achieved less tangible successes in men's football and basketball than any other team in Division 1A over the last 15 years I think his criticism is entirely appropriate. Small steps made by Turner are directly responsible for SMU's 4-26 under Bennett since the COMMITMENT*. Maybe Turner is not to blame but SMU fans can certainly begin to draw conclusions as to whether SMU has made the COMMITMENT* necessary to compete in Division 1A. *Was it a COMMITMENT or simply the best commitment SMU could make under the circumstances-due to factors outside the control of SMU's CEO-because of the entrenched draconian policies of the Faculty Senate-which were implemented under Kenneth Pye. SMU fans, alumni and supporters deserve an answer to THAT question.
