Whatever reputation TCU had before the drug arrests was altered after they happened. To claim that TCU is still a program that has not had criminal athletes, even after having its program turned upside-down by arrests, is to completely ignore what happened.

What you are saying is no different than if one made that claim that an admitted murderer can be seen to have lived a blameless, peaceful life, so long as one deliberately ignores the instances in which he killed people.

The standard isn't perfection and never should be. Every program is going to have some athletes that do dumb things. These are 18 to 22 year olds after all. The issue is how commonplace those events are and what steps the program is doing to curb them. In this regard, TCU runs a clean program.

Also, your murderer example doesn't make any sense at all. It assumes that all crimes or offenses are the same and they clearly are not. Marijuana use is a minor offense compared to murder.

I don't know. Even with the arrests, their record still is pretty solid compared to the other major schools. I think the big deal that SI was highlighting if I remember correctly was that TCU was the only major program not to have a serious arrest during that time they were looking at. It also went on to talk about how TCU was taking additional steps in filtering out program recruits from the beginning of the process with the background checks.

It may seem like a bigger deal now because of the relative recency of those arrests (now actually over 3 months ago), but extending the time period wouldn't really change their main message which is that compared to the other major programs, TCU runs a clean program. In addition, if you are really going to compare TCU's recent arrests, you have to look at the transparency issue. TCU and the local police department didn't just stop with possession arrests like occurs at most major programs. How would the landscape really look if other major programs were doing 6 month sting investigations?

You are using a different definition for "clean program" than was established in this thread. The criteria were not related to the efforts a program takes, but as to whether or not a team has criminal players. TCU recently had players arrested. Therefore, by the criteria used in this thread, TCU is not a clean program.

Whether or not you agree with a particular definition for the word "clean program," however, is unimportant. Arguing over what defines a "clean program" does not change that TCU players were arrested. While you may prefer to dismiss it as an isolated incident, there is no escaping that it happened. So, yes, TCU can be counted among those programs having players that have been arrested.

Coaches and others who say"they are interested in giving a kid a second chance" are so off the mark and contribute more to the problems in academics and athletics today. Raise the bar and there will be kids who want to succeed and will meet the standards. The opportunity is there. Lower the standards and 2nd and 3rd chances.....that is for junior colleges to give the kids opportunities to prove themselves worthy.This "no student/athlete left behind" mentality needs to stop at our "institutions of higher learning!

Well, it is no longer a rumor. Herschel Sims has been kicked off the team. I did hear something that he may go the JUCO route to then get on with Baylor but I would think SMU should be trying to make a case at that point. I don't see why him and his cousin couldn't play both the slot positions for SMU. I think a year in the JUCO might cause some hard hearts to reconsider or at least soften on the idea. I just read an article on the events and aftermath of this incident and if it is all true, SMU should say no thank you to Mr. Sims. Read for yourself but there is a serious accountability issue here.
