Building Stanford into a power w/ unconventional recruiting

David Shaw building Stanford into a perennial power with unconventional recruiting mandate

Great article, which speaks volumes on how The Cardinal are getting it done. Great lesson to consider, in order to build a perpetual power.

Yahoo! Sports - PALO ALTO, Calif.

"When David Shaw and his assistant coaches go out in search of football recruits capable of playing for Stanford, the list of necessary attributes is long.

Superior academics are mandatory for admission and success at the elite university. Great athletic ability, strength and speed are a necessity to play for the reigning Pac-12 champions. Character, leadership and motivation are highly valued intangibles.

And then there is something unique Stanford coaches evaluate when meeting with a prospect, something that few would think predicts football success."

I cannot resist and am sharing another article about David Shaw, when he got the Stanford HC job. Worth a read and there is a line in it that I absolutely loved:

“In the football vernacular,” Bowlsby said, “David outkicked his coverage.” Funny stuff.

Other than SMU (of course) my favorite college football programs are Stanford and Vanderbilt. Both schools strive for the best of what college athletics and academics should stand for while still competing at a national level. I have great respect for Notre Dame as well but just can't get past my hatred of them.
Back off Warchild seriously.

I agree on both Stanford and Vanderbilt. Despite the tremendous, built-in advantage of being members of Power Conference$, (as is Northwestern, who I would place in this category as well), I always enjoy the success of these schools. They do it right and have wonderful reputations in everything they do. As for ND, I don't a problem with them, despite their hubris, which I feel is less than Whorns, USC, and Alabama.
