LANCE COTTRELL: On the move

Postby PonyPride » Sat Jun 29, 2013 6:23 pm

Plano West's Lance Cottrell was the first commitment in SMU's 2014 class, which makes sense, since he received his offer when he was a high school freshman. Before he arrives on the Hilltop, he has another move to make: from defensive end to linebacker. Cottrell and his high school coach visited with PonyFans.com to discuss his development as a player and his reasons for choosing SMU.

Great story. Really like the fact that he loves football, but made his early commitment for academic reasons (at least partly). He sounds like a really sharp, level-headed guy.
Welcome to SMU, Lance!

I talked today with a friend whose son played for Plano West, so he (dad) went to every game. He said Cottrell is thin (especially as a DE), but "wiry strong and really fast" and said that "he's relentless. Once he gets his hands on you, you're done."

He also said that Mason Gentry is going to be better than we (fans) realize. He said that at the beginning of the year, Gentry had no idea what he was doing, and by the end of the year, teams were specifically running away from him because he was tearing it up so consistently.

Dammit, I need SMU football to start now.
